Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The lead federal agent walked straight up to Martin and Daniel, pulling silver handcuffs from his belt.

“Martin Vance, Daniel Miller,” the agent declared in a clear, authoritative voice. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, wire embezzlement, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit attempted murder.”

“Attempted murder?!” Daniel shrieked, breaking into full panic. He fell to his knees right there on the carpet, grabbing the edge of the granite table. “No! It was Martin! Martin hired the mechanic to cut the brake lines! I only helped with the money! I didn’t want him dead! Victor, please! Tell them! I was your best friend!”

“Shut up, you idiot!” Martin roared, lunging at Daniel before two police officers grabbed his arms and slammed him down against the conference table, pulling his hands behind his back and snapping the cuffs securely around his wrists.

The board members looked on in absolute shock and silence as the two powerful executives were unceremoniously restrained, their polished arrogance replaced by pathetic, weeping desperation.

Vanessa tried to quietly slip along the glass wall toward the door, her eyes fixed on the exit.

“Miss Vanessa Vance,” the federal agent called out, stopping her in her tracks. “Or should I say, Vanessa Sterling.”

Vanessa froze, her posture stiffening.

“You are also named as a co-conspirator in the federal indictment for offshore money laundering and tax evasion,” the agent said, gesturing to two officers. “You’ll be coming with us as well.”

“No! Don’t touch me!” Vanessa screamed as an officer grabbed her wrists. She kicked and thriggled wildly, her expensive white suit disheveled, her hair falling out of its neat bun. “Victor! Help me! You can’t let them do this to me! I’m your fiancée! Tell them it’s a mistake! Victor!”

She looked at me with eyes filled with absolute desperation, begging for a single crumb of mercy.

I stood completely still, my arms crossed, watching her with total indifference.

“Clara,” I said quietly, without taking my eyes off Vanessa.

Clara stepped forward, standing side by side with me.

“Take her engagement ring,” I said calmly.

Clara walked over to Vanessa, who was struggling against the officer’s grip. Clara didn’t flinch. With calm, steady hands, she reached out and pulled the massive diamond ring off Vanessa’s manicured finger.

Vanessa gasped, looking at Clara with pure venom. “You worthless little bitch! You stole my life!”

Clara looked Vanessa straight in the eye, her voice clear and unbroken. “You gave it away the moment you decided to treat a human being like garbage.”

Clara turned around and walked back to my side, placing the sparkling diamond ring into my open hand.

I walked over to the trash can beside the executive podium, dropped the multi-million-dollar diamond ring inside, and listened to it hit the plastic bottom with a hollow thud.

“Take them away,” I ordered.

The police dragged Martin, Daniel, and a screaming, sobbing Vanessa out of the boardroom, their panicked voices fading down the long hallway until the heavy doors slammed shut once again.

Silence returned to the room.

The board members sat in stunned awe, looking at me with a newfound level of deep respect and absolute fear. I walked over to the head of the table, took my rightful seat in the executive chair, and looked around the room.

“Now,” I said calmly, resting my hands on the table. “Let us begin today’s board meeting.”
