Chapter 19 - The Bloodline Revealed

I sat in the dim light of the penthouse, the silence ringing in my ears like a siren, as Bennett inserted the cassette tape into an antique player we kept in the library.

The tape hissed with static, then a voice filled the room—deep, resonant, and unmistakably Thomas Vance.

*"Haley,"* the recording began, his voice carrying the faint wheeze of his final illness. *"If you are listening to this, it means Arthur and Eleanor have tried to consume you. And it means you have proven yourself worthy of the name they tried so desperately to steal."*

I leaned forward, my breath trapped in my throat.

*"Your mother, Victoria, was the true genius of Vance Maritime,"* my grandfather continued, tenderness softening his gruff tone. *"She built the harbor designs. She secured the European treaties. Arthur was always jealous—a small, bitter man with none of his sister's intellect and all of their mother's vanity. When Victoria died in that crash, she left an infant girl behind. You."*

The tape crackled.

*"I knew what Arthur was. I knew what Eleanor was. They had no money, no vision, and no claim to my empire. But Swiss probate law at the time required an immediate nuclear family guardian to prevent the state from liquidating Victoria's private trusts. I forced Arthur and Eleanor to adopt you legally. In exchange, I allowed them to live in the estate and draw a modest stipend from Vance Logistics."*

The truth crashed over me like a tidal wave.

All those years of emotional abuse.

All those years of Eleanor favoring Daniel, pampering him, buying him luxury while treating me like a hired servant.

All those years of Arthur screaming that I was an ungrateful child who owed everything to his family name.

I was never their daughter.

I was the legal heir to the woman they had always envied.

*"They agreed to the adoption because of the trust stipends,"* grandfather’s voice echoed from the speaker. *"But I knew their hatred for Victoria would bleed onto you. That is why I designed the corporate charter to protect you. I locked the real voting shares until your twenty-fifth birthday or until Arthur attempted to usurp your assets. If you are hearing this, Haley, Arthur has fallen, and you hold the sovereign crown."*

The recording paused for several seconds.

*"One final warning, my brave girl,"* grandfather's voice dropped, laced with a sudden, grave urgency. *"Victoria's plane did not crash due to bad weather. Julian Thorne was a suspect, but the funding for the sabotage originated from within Savannah. There was a third conspirator. Someone who stayed in the shadows while Arthur took the blame and Daniel played the fool. Find the cargo manifest for the vessel named 'The Cerberus.' Find it, Haley. Before they realize you know."*

The tape ended with a sharp click.

Static filled the room.

Bennett stood frozen, his eyes wide with shock. "Miss Haley... Victoria’s plane crash was ruled an accident by the Swiss authorities in 2000."

"Because Arthur paid the investigators to close the file," I said, my voice shaking with a cold, terrifying fury. I stood up, gripping the edge of the mahogany desk. "My parents didn't just abuse me, Bennett. They didn't just try to leave me to die in that emergency room."

"They murdered your mother," Bennett whispered.

May you like

"No," I replied, staring out at the dark waters of the Savannah River. "Arthur was too cowardly to plant a bomb on an airplane. Grandfather said there was a third conspirator. Someone who funded it from Savannah."
