Chapter 17 - The Broken Covenant

Julian Thorne was escorted onto the concrete pier under the heavy guard of federal tactical officers. The rain had ruined his tailored coat, his silver hair was plastered to his forehead, and his cold, aristocratic mask had shattered into raw, furious disbelief.

Evelyn Cross stood beside the federal prosecutor, a thick manila folder held securely beneath an umbrella.

"This is an outrage!" Thorne snarled, struggling against the firm grip of two federal marshals. "I have sovereign maritime deeds to this berth! I have the Oakhaven indenture signed by Thomas Vance himself!"

I walked down the metal stairs of the command tower, stopping five feet from him.

"The Oakhaven indenture is void, Mr. Thorne," I said, my voice cutting through the damp chill of the night.

"You have no authority to void a twenty-year-old sovereign covenant!" Thorne shouted. "Your grandfather owed me! He built this entire port with my offshore capital!"

"My grandfather didn't owe you anything," Evelyn stepped forward, opening the folder to reveal an embossed document with a red wax seal. "This is the unsealed audit from the Zurich vault that your legal team so kindly retrieved on Daniel's instructions."

Thorne narrowed his eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"Thomas Vance never took a dime of your capital," Evelyn said. "In 1999, Thomas Vance was working as an undercover informant for the Department of the Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. The Oakhaven Trust wasn't an investment vehicle, Thorne. It was an international sting repository."

Thorne went dead silent, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse in the glare of the harbor searchlights.

"My grandfather knew you were laundering illicit maritime cartels through European container lines," I said, watching him crumble. "He set up Oakhaven to document every single dollar you funneled through Savannah. And when he realized his own son, Arthur, was too stupid and greedy to be trusted with the truth, he locked the vault and tied the trigger to Arthur's total failure."

"No..." Thorne whispered, backing away until the federal marshals tightened their hold on his arms. "That's impossible. Thomas was my partner..."

"Thomas Vance despised criminals," I said coldly. "He protected this port from you twenty years ago. And tonight, using the very greed of my brother and mother to lure you into American jurisdiction, I finished what he started."

The federal prosecutor stepped up, presenting a signed warrant. "Julian Thorne, you are under arrest for racketeering, maritime smuggling, international wire fraud, and conspiracy to evade federal bankruptcy seizure. You have the right to remain silent."

As the marshals cuffed his wrists behind his back, Thorne glared at me, his eyes burning with an animalistic hatred.

"You think you've won, girl?" Thorne spat, rain dripping from his chin. "You think you're the master of the Vance legacy? You know nothing! You don't even know who you are!"

I didn't answer. I turned my back on him as they forced him into the back of a federal interceptor vehicle.

The harbor was ours. The deep-water terminal was secure. Every ship, every crane, every inch of concrete belonged to Vance Logistics.

Yet Thorne’s final words echoed in my mind, cold and sinister, refusing to wash away with the rain.
