Chapter 9 - The Hammer of Justice

The silence that followed Gertrude’s unceremonious ejection was absolute. Arthur Grisham looked down at his legal pad, entirely defeated, refusing to make eye contact with his client.

Judge Alpert adjusted her glasses and looked down from the bench with the moral authority of a sovereign ruler.

"In thirty-two years on the family bench," the judge began, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel, "I have rarely witnessed such an appalling display of parasitic entitlement, deceit, and profound parental neglect. Mr. Cole, you have treated your wife not as a partner, but as an unwilling host organism to be drained by you, your mother, and your sister."

Brandon sat completely motionless, his head hanging, his shoulders trembling.

"The court makes the following orders," Judge Alpert declared, her pen moving across the docket with rapid, scratching strokes:

"First: Full temporary legal and sole physical custody of the minor child Skylar is awarded exclusively to Mrs. Montgomery. Mr. Cole will have no visitation rights pending the completion of a comprehensive psychological evaluation, a forty-eight-hour parenting course, and a showing of six months of consistent negative drug and gambling screenings. All future visitation, if ever granted, will be strictly supervised at an approved professional facility at Mr. Cole’s sole expense."

"Your Honor, please..." Brandon croaked, tears streaming down his face. "She's my daughter..."

"You abdicated your role as a father the night you allowed your mother to starve her in a dark kitchen while you gorged yourself on crab legs," Judge Alpert replied coldly.

"Second: The court affirms the exclusive use and possession of the residence to Mrs. Montgomery. The Temporary Restraining Order is converted into a three-year Civil Protection Order. Mr. Cole is prohibited from coming within one thousand yards of Mrs. Montgomery, Skylar, the residence, the child's school, and Mrs. Montgomery's place of employment."

"Third: Regarding Mr. Grisham's petition for temporary spousal support from Mrs. Montgomery to Mr. Cole: Denied with prejudice. Under California Family Code Section 4325, this court finds a clear and documented history of intentional financial domestic abuse and attempted real property fraud. Not only will Mrs. Montgomery pay zero temporary alimony, but the court enters an immediate preliminary restitution lien against Mr. Cole’s remaining separate banking assets in the amount of eighty-six thousand dollars to reimburse the trust for diverted community funds."

Grisham gave a miserable, microscopic nod. He didn't even bother to object. He knew that pressing further would result in sanctions slapped directly onto his own bar license.

"Finally," Judge Alpert concluded, turning her gaze toward the court clerk. "The clerk is directed to forward this entire case file, including all exhibits and transcripts, directly to the Office of the District Attorney, Real Estate Fraud Division, for immediate criminal review. We are adjourned."

*BANG.*

The sound of the gavel felt like the closing of a heavy steel vault door.

Elena turned to me, a radiant, triumphant smile spreading across her face, and squeezed my hands tightly. "It's over, Char. It's completely over."

I didn't smile right away. I took a deep, shuddering breath, feeling the phantom weight of six years of emotional manipulation, financial anxiety, and quiet dread lift off my ribs. For the first time in over a decade, the air filling my lungs belonged solely to me.

Across the aisle, Brandon slowly stood up. He looked aged by twenty years. His suit hung loosely on his frame, his eyes were bloodshot and hollow, and his hands shook uncontrollably.

He looked at me across the wooden divider, opening his mouth to speak—to offer one last hollow excuse, one last pitiful apology.

I didn't give him the chance.

I turned my back on him, zipped up my leather briefcase, and walked down the center aisle of the courtroom with my head held high, out into the blinding California sunlight.
