Chapter 5 - The Architect's Retreat

Right on cue, the doorbell rang.

The chime echoed through the tense, suffocating stillness of the house. Hailey jumped as if a gunshot had gone off. Brandon looked like a man standing before a firing squad whose blindfold had just slipped off.

"I'll get that," Elena said cheerfully.

She walked to the front door and opened it wide. Standing on the porch was Marcus Vance, impeccably dressed in a tailored blazer, holding a pair of heavy leather-bound presentation binders under his arm. Behind him stood a junior draftsman carrying an easel.

"Good morning!" Marcus announced with the polished, booming confidence of a man about to secure a lucrative contract. "Marcus Vance Design. We have a ten o'clock design review and contract execution with Brandon and Charlotte Cole."

"Please, Mr. Vance, step right into the dining room," Elena invited with a dazzling smile. "We've been eagerly awaiting your arrival."

Marcus strode in, flashing a bright, veneers-and-tanning-bed smile. "Brandon, my man! Morning! Beautiful light in here. We can easily knock out this load-bearing wall to create that continuous grand gallery into your mother's private suite."

Brandon stood paralyzed, his lips trembling, unable to utter a single syllable.

"Mr. Vance," I said, stepping between him and the blueprints. "I am Charlotte Montgomery. The sole owner of this property."

Marcus blinked, his practiced smile dimming slightly. "Ah, Mrs. Cole! Wonderful to finally meet the woman behind the vision. Brandon mentioned you were deeply enthusiastic about the new master wing and the private garage conversion for your sister-in-law."

"Did he?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "Tell me, Mr. Vance, who provided you with the authorization to draw these plans?"

"Well... Brandon did. He signed the preliminary design retainer three weeks ago as the managing co-owner." Marcus reached into his binder and pulled out a signed document. "Right here. Brandon Cole, Attorney-in-Fact for Charlotte Montgomery Cole."

Elena stepped up beside Marcus, holding out a laminated sheet. "Mr. Vance, this is a formal Cease and Desist, accompanied by an affidavit of forgery filed with the California State Bar and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. The Power of Attorney document you possess contains a forged notary stamp belonging to a woman named Clara Higgins, who retired to Florida in 2021. Mrs. Montgomery has never authorized any renovation, never authorized any loan, and never authorized Brandon Cole to sign so much as a grocery receipt on her behalf."

Marcus Vance's tan visibly faded to a sickly ash-gray. He looked at the legal document in Elena's hand, then glanced at Deputy Miller, who nodded grimly.

"Is this... is this true?" Marcus stammered, turning on Brandon. "You told me the trust assets were co-mingled! You gave me a sworn financial statement showing a four-hundred-thousand-dollar liquid liquidity line!"

"He lied," I said simply. "And if you accept one dollar of money from him, or if any worker from your company drives a single nail into my grandfather’s walls, you will be named as a co-conspirator in a felony grand-theft and fraud indictment. Deputy Miller here will happily escort you to the door."

Marcus Vance didn't wait to hear another word. He snatched his binders off the table, completely abandoning the blueprints.

"We are done here," Marcus snapped at Brandon, his voice shaking with professional fury. "Do not contact my office again. If your bogus retainer check bounces, my attorneys will be handling it. Pack up the easel, Toby! We're leaving!"

"Marcus, wait! We can work this out!" Brandon cried, lunging toward him, but Deputy Miller stepped between them, an immovable wall of blue wool and brass badges.

"Stay where you are, Mr. Cole," the deputy instructed firmly.

The front door slammed shut. The deafening silence returned, thicker and far more dangerous than before.

"You ruined it," Hailey wept suddenly, sinking her head into her hands. "You ruined everything! That suite was going to be the filming backdrop for my brand! We had brand sponsors lined up for the home makeover! You are the most selfish, vindictive bitch I have ever met in my life!"

I walked over to Hailey, stopped two inches from her chair, and leaned down until my eyes were level with hers.

"Hailey," I whispered, cold as glacial runoff. "You haven't paid a dime in rent in eleven months. You drove my car without insurance. You used my Nordstrom card to buy seven thousand dollars' worth of handbags which you then claimed were 'business expenses' for your failed cosmetics channel. And last night, you watched my daughter eat instant noodles while you filmed your crab legs for the internet."

I straightened up, looking down at her like a bug on a specimen slide.

"Your brand is dead. And by this afternoon, your bags will be on the curb."
