Chapter 3 - The Midnight Reckoning

The executive suite at the Marriott was quiet, the only sound the hum of the climate control unit keeping the room at a comfortable seventy degrees. Skylar had taken a hot bath, curled into the plush king-sized bed, and fallen into the deep, uninterrupted sleep she had been denied for months.

I didn't sleep.

I sat at the dark mahogany work desk near the window, the glow of my laptop screen cutting through the shadows. Plugged into the USB port was the black flash drive I had guarded like a weapon.

My phone rang again. *Brandon.*

This time, I swiped green, putting it directly on speakerphone, while simultaneously activating the call-recording software on my laptop.

"Charlotte! Where the hell are you?!" Brandon’s voice erupted through the tiny speaker, high-pitched, shrill with panic masquerading as righteous anger. "Do you have any idea what you've done? Mom's blood pressure is two hundred over a hundred! She had to take two nitro pills because of you!"

"Is that so?" I replied, my tone flat, devoid of inflection.

"Yes, it is so! We were in the middle of dinner when the waiter from the seafood bistro called back saying the second card run was declined! Mom had to pay out of her personal savings! Do you know how humiliating that was for her? For my family?"

"Brandon, your family was eating king crab on my dime while our daughter was relegated to a bucket of powdered sodium in the dark."

"Oh, don't start with that melodramatic garbage again!" he scoffed, his voice dripping with venom. "Skylar had chicken tenders at two o'clock! Mom was just trying to teach her discipline and respect for adult boundaries! You spoil her rotten, Charlotte, and you act like you're the only person who works in this country!"

"I am the only person who works in *this* house," I corrected.

"Shut up! Just shut your mouth and listen to me!" Brandon bellowed, slamming a fist against something solid on his end. "You unlock those accounts right now! We have Marcus Vance arriving at ten o'clock sharp. Hailey spent three months curating the architectural boards for the rear conversion! We need thirty thousand dollars for the retainer, or he drops us from the calendar!"

"What conversion, Brandon?" I asked quietly.

There was a slight pause, the briefest hesitation of a con artist caught mid-stride. "The... the guest suite conversion. We're enclosing the patio, absorbing Skylar’s current bedroom into a master wing for Mom, and adding a private entrance. Skylar can move into the small study downstairs. She doesn't need all that space anyway, and Mom needs ground-floor access for her joints. It increases the property value, Char. It’s an investment!"

He was casually dispossessing our daughter of her bedroom to build a permanent palace for his mother, all paid for with money he intended to extract from *my* equity.

"And how were you planning to pay for the rest of this two-hundred-thousand-dollar build, Brandon?"

"We took out a home equity loan," he said casually, as if talking about buying a gallon of milk. "The paperwork is already approved. You just need to show up and provide your counter-signature tomorrow morning. Or don't show up—I've already handled the preliminary filings under the spousal authorization grant."

*Spousal authorization grant.* That was his euphemism for the forged Power of Attorney.

"I see," I whispered.

"So stop this childish tantrum!" Brandon barked, emboldened by my silence. "Transfer ten thousand dollars to my checking account right now so I can get a certified cashier's check before the banks open, and bring Skylar home. Mom expects an apology from both of you before breakfast."

"I'll be there at nine-thirty, Brandon."

"You better be. And bring your checkbook." He hung up with a sharp click.

I stared at the black screen of my phone. A slow, chilling smile touched my lips.

I clicked open a spreadsheet I had compiled over the past six months. Row by row, transaction by transaction:

* March 12: $4,500 transferred from household checking to "Apex Ventures LLC"—a shell company registered under Hailey's name.

* April 4: $12,000 cash advance on the platinum card, withdrawn at the San Manuel Casino. (Brandon's "physiotherapy retreat").

* June 18: $8,200 charged to a luxury med-spa in Newport Beach. (Gertrude's non-surgical facelift and filler packages, marked as "emergency dental work").

* September 29: An unauthorized title search and forged subordination request filed against my grandfather’s trust with an offshore lending outfit.

They hadn't just been living off me. They had been systematically attempting to strip-mine my family's legacy, dollar by dollar, brick by brick, treating my labor as an infinite well they could poison at will.

I closed the laptop, walked over to the bed, and pulled the down comforter up over Skylar's shoulders. She stirred, curling inward, clutching the hotel pillow.

"Sleep well, sweetheart," I whispered into her hair. "The storm arrives tomorrow, but it won't touch you."
