Chapter 9 - The Purge

Over the following month, my life became a study in methodical decontamination.
Every room in the Gold Coast brownstone was stripped down to the structural framing by professional sanitization crews. Vanessa’s custom-built walk-in closets, her furs, her jewelry, and her imported furniture were cataloged and surrendered to the court-appointed receivership to be auctioned for Teresa’s restitution fund.
The toxicologists cleared my system after three rigorous rounds of chelation therapy. The cognitive fog that had clouded my judgment lifted like mist burned away by an autumn sunrise. My concentration returned, razor-sharp and unyielding.
At Vance Aerospace, I initiated an immediate audit of our internal cybersecurity protocols. Marcus Cole was promoted to Vice President of Corporate Defense, his department granted sweeping authority to inspect every digital portal and vendor relationship.
When the formal indictment came down from the federal grand jury, it contained thirty-four felony counts against Rachel Albright and Julian Albright. The state of Michigan simultaneously issued an exhumation order for Arthur Pendelton’s remains, where forensic examiners confirmed lethal traces of thallium sulfate in his preserved bone marrow, adding a capital murder charge to Rachel’s ledger.
On a crisp Tuesday morning in late November, Teresa walked back through the heavy oak doors of my home. Her bruises had healed into faint, pale lines on her wrists, but her posture was no longer that of a hesitant housekeeper.
I met her in the foyer, holding a thick document bearing the official gold seal of the Vance Family Trust.
"Welcome home, Teresa," I said, guiding her toward the parlor where a fresh pot of coffee—brewed by my own hands—waited on the silver tray.
"It feels strange being back, Mr. David," she admitted quietly, touching the polished marble column where she had faced death. "The shadows feel lighter."

"The shadows are gone," I said, handing her the document. "And your days of working as a domestic employee are over."
