Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The trap was set for Julian Albright at two o’clock that afternoon.
Unaware that Vanessa was currently being processed without bail at the Cook County Department of Corrections, Julian arrived at the Gold Coast penthouse carrying an Italian leather attaché case. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his golden watch glinting under the autumn sun as he pressed the elevator code for the private floor.
The elevator doors slid open into the silence of the marble foyer.
The floor was spotless. The nylon cords had been cleared; the scorched plaster had been patched and painted over with fast-drying compound. But sitting behind the broad oak dining table, perfectly still, was not his partner in crime.
It was me.
Beside me stood Detective Harris and two plainclothes tactical officers.
Julian stopped in his tracks, his polished smile instantly vanishing. His hand twitched toward the handle of his briefcase. "David... what a surprise. Vanessa told me you were tied up with the defense contractors in Seattle until tomorrow morning."
"The Seattle contract was signed three days ago, Julian," I said calmly, taking a slow sip of water. "Seattle was never the problem. The problem was right here, in my foyer, holding a butane lighter against my housekeeper’s cheek."
Julian’s eyes darted toward the elevator, but the doors had already chimed, locked down by remote override from the lobby console. "I don't know what you’re talking about. If Vanessa had an altercation with the staff, that’s an internal household issue."
"Drop the briefcase on the floor, Mr. Albright," Detective Harris ordered, producing his gold badge. "Step three paces back and keep your hands visible."
"This is harassment," Julian sneered, though beads of sweat were already forming along his hairline. "I am an accredited wealth manager representing Miss Cross’s family holdings. I have full immunity under our retainer agreements to review David’s pre-marital filings."
"Your family holdings are a collection of post-office boxes in Nassau," I said, sliding the toxicology report and the Nevada arrest record across the table. "And your client isn't Vanessa Cross. She’s Rachel Albright. Your legal wife of twelve years."

Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. His jaw worked silently as he realized the entire labyrinth of lies had collapsed in a single morning.
