Chapter 2 - The Broken Facade

The blue and red lights painted rhythmic slashes across the mahogany foyer walls long before the sirens died. Vanessa backed away from Teresa, her manicured fingers clawing at the collar of her silk blouse. The haughty posture she had worn for seventeen months melted into cornered animal panic.

"David, please," she hissed, her voice dropping into a desperate, trembling register that had previously melted my defenses. "You’re blowing this out of proportion. Teresa was hysterical. She scratched me first. I panicked. I had to restrain her until you came home to handle it."

I looked down at the frayed clothesline pooling beside Teresa’s swollen, purple ankles. "You tied her with industrial nylon knots, Vanessa. You scorched the fringe of her collar with an open flame. Don't insult my intelligence."

Teresa wept silently against my shoulder as I kept my arm anchored around her trembling frame. The front door vibrated under heavy pounding. When I disengaged the deadbolt, two uniformed Chicago police officers and a pair of paramedics pushed inside with practical, practiced urgency.

"Officer Martinez," the lead patrolwoman introduced herself, her eyes taking in the torn cords on the marble floor, the scorched plaster behind the pillar, and Teresa’s lacerated wrists. "Which one of you placed the distress call?"

"I did," I said, handing over my identification. "David Vance. The homeowner. My fiancée attacked my employee, held her captive under threat of immolation, and fabricated a felony theft to conceal it."

Vanessa stepped forward with theatrical grace, extending both palms forward. "Officers, this is a terrible domestic misunderstanding! Teresa stole family heirlooms from my dresser. When I confronted her, she threatened to ruin my marriage. I acted in self-defense!"

"Step back, ma'am," Martinez’s partner commanded, resting his hand casually on his duty belt.

The paramedics guided Teresa to a portable stretcher. As they wrapped cold compress bandages around her rope burns, Officer Martinez leaned over the marble base of the column, inspecting a jagged drop of dried blood on the stone.

"She tried to burn me, officer," Teresa gasped into the oxygen mask. "She wanted me to sign a confession saying I stole her jewelry. Because last night, I heard her telling Julian to prepare the offshore accounts before David signed the revised prenuptial agreement tomorrow."

Vanessa’s jaw tightened. "She's an unstable domestic worker trying to extort my fiancé! Check her apron! The diamonds are in her pockets!"

"We don't need to check her apron," I interrupted, raising my smartphone screen so the officers could see the high-resolution feed. "We’re going to watch the house cloud storage. The timestamp shows Vanessa walking into Teresa’s quarters with that velvet box forty minutes before the ambush. It's all uploaded off-site, uneditable, and linked to my corporate legal servers."

Vanessa swayed, clutching the bannister. Her veneer of wealth and poised sophistication cracked down the middle, revealing the predatory rot beneath.
