Chapter 6 - The Montgomery Collapse

The fall of Vanessa was only the first domino.
Arthur Montgomery, sitting in his penthouse apartment in Manhattan, watched the news coverage with rising panic. His business, Montgomery Real Estate, was built on a house of cards—a delicate web of bank loans secured by property valuations that were inflated by nearly three hundred percent. For six years, whenever a loan came due, Vanessa had quietly transferred funds from Halcyon-backed accounts to keep his firm afloat.
Now, those funds were frozen solid.
His office phone rang relentlessly. Bank executives, audit investigators, and private creditors were calling simultaneously.
At 2:00 PM, his secretary burst into his office without knocking.
“Mr. Montgomery, federal marshals are downstairs. They have a warrant for your financial ledgers.”
Arthur’s face turned grey. He grabbed his coat and rushed toward his private elevator, intent on reaching the basement garage where his driver was waiting. But as the elevator doors opened on the ground floor, three men in dark suits stepped into his path.
“Arthur Montgomery?” the lead agent asked, producing a badge. “Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering.”
“This is a mistake!” Arthur yelled, waving his hands wildly. “My son-in-law is Adrian Vance! He will fix this! Call Halcyon!”
The agent offered a cold, professional smile as he placed Arthur in handcuffs. “Mr. Vance was the person who turned over the audit files to the Department of Justice three hours ago, sir.”
Arthur stood frozen as the realization hit him like a physical blow.

I had not simply caught Vanessa in the act of cruelty; I had spent three months systematically dismantling every support structure her family possessed. I had traced every penny, documented every fraudulent transfer, and held my tongue until the trap was completely sprung.
By evening, the Montgomery family name, which had once been a ticket to exclusive galas and high-society privileges, was completely radioactive. Bank accounts were seized, properties were foreclosed upon, and the once-proud family found themselves facing dozens of federal indictments with zero liquid assets left to defend themselves.
