Chapter 4 - A New Sovereign

The gates of the Bedford Estate opened smoothly as the black Mercedes van glided up the winding, tree-lined driveway. Inside sat Elena, her sister Maria, and her elderly mother, Rosa, who had never flown on an airplane before, let alone stepped foot inside an American country estate.
Elena watched her mother’s hands tremble as she held a handkerchief against her mouth, staring in awe at the soaring stone pillars and the cascading fountains.
“Elena...” Rosa whispered in Tagalog, her eyes wide with terror and wonder. “Are we in trouble? Is this where you work?”
“No, Nanay,” Elena said, her voice shaking with emotions she had suppressed for years. She reached out and took her mother’s hands, which were rough from decades of manual labor in the rice fields of Luzon. “We are not in trouble. And I don’t work here anymore.”
The van stopped before the grand portico. The front doors of the mansion swung open, but instead of Vanessa standing there in high heels issuing cruel commands, a line of professional staff stepped out—led by Mr. Jennings, the estate’s veteran chief butler who had resigned three months prior due to Vanessa’s abuse, but had immediately returned when I rehired him under new management.
Jennings bowed respectfully as Elena stepped out of the vehicle.
“Welcome home, Ms. Santos,” Jennings said warmly, his voice clear and deferential. “The master suite has been prepared for your mother. We have arranged for a private medical team to conduct a routine checkup for her comfort after the long flight. Dinner will be served at seven.”
Elena stood on the stone steps, looking up at the high arched entrance where, just thirty-six hours ago, she had been kneeling on the floor, waiting for a leather strap to strike her face.
She walked inside. The smell of Vanessa’s heavy, oppressive perfume was gone, replaced by the fresh scent of white lilies and fresh pine. The winter salon, once a room of humiliation, had been completely cleared of the furniture associated with that night. The leather strap had been taken into police evidence; the sofa where Vanessa’s friends had sat laughing was gone, replaced by warm, inviting armchairs.
Elena walked slowly toward the marble fireplace. She looked down at the spot where her blood had nearly touched the stone.
She took a deep, trembling breath, feeling the air fill her lungs not as a servant holding her breath in fear, but as a woman who owned every inch of the floor beneath her feet.
Her phone chimed. It was a message from Miriam Cole:
“Ms. Santos, the deeds are fully recorded in the county registry. The endowment account balance of $5,000,000 has been confirmed. You are the sole legal authority on this property. If anyone attempts to trespass, including members of the Montgomery or Vance families, security has orders to detain them immediately.”
Elena folded her hands together—not in a gesture of pleading, as she had done under Vanessa’s whip, but in a quiet, solemn prayer of gratitude.

She turned to her sister and mother, who were standing in the center of the foyer, afraid to step on the grand rug.
“Come,” Elena said, her voice steady, filled with a dignity that no master could ever strip away. “Let me show you our home.”
