Chapter 8 - The Ambush at the Studio

The next afternoon, Lily arrived at her graphic design office in the town square. She knew Vance’s men would make a move; she had deliberately isolated herself to draw them out.

She sat at her desk, leaving the front door unlocked. The blinds were drawn, casting long shadows across the hardwood floor.

At two-fifteen, the bell above the shop door chimed.

Three men entered. The leader was a massive, thick-necked brawler with cauliflower ears and tattoos spiraling up his throat—one of Marcus Vance’s professional enforcers. Behind him was another heavy-set street fighter, and bringing up the rear, wearing dark sunglasses to hide his bruised ego, was Jake Reynolds.

Jake looked around the empty studio, a malicious smirk spreading across his face.

"Cute place you have here, Lily," Jake said, tapping a metal baseball bat against the palm of his hand. "Shame about the broken window last night. Might be a shame if the rest of your computer equipment ended up on the floor."

Lily didn't look up from her sketchpad. She calmly drew a straight line with her graphite pencil.

"I told you what would happen if you came near me, Jake."

"You're not on the blue mats now, lady," the tattooed brawler growled, stepping forward and cracking his knuckles. "You got lucky catching Jake off guard. But you're in the real world now. Mr. Vance wants you brought to his training facility. On your feet."

Lily laid her pencil down. She slowly stood up, pushing her chair back.

She wasn't wearing her baggy sweatpants today. She wore dark athletic leggings, flat-soled boxing shoes, and a fitted black long-sleeve shirt. Her hair was pulled back into tight, practical cornrows.

"Jake," Lily said, her voice dropping into that chilling, icy calm. "This is your last chance to turn around and walk away."

"Shut her up," Jake commanded the brawler.

The tattooed man lunged forward, throwing a heavy, looping right hook aimed at Lily’s jaw, intending to knock her unconscious instantly.

Lily didn't dodge back. She stepped *in*.

She slipped inside the arc of his punch, her left elbow driving savagely into his solar plexus. The giant gasped, his forward momentum instantly broken. Before he could double over, Lily pivoted on her heel and drove a spinning back-elbow directly into the side of his jaw.

*CRACK.*

The sound of shattering bone echoed through the studio. The two-hundred-and-forty-pound enforcer crashed face-first onto the hardwood floor, unconscious before his body even settled.

The second man froze in horror, his eyes wide with disbelief. He reached toward his waistband, but Lily was already across the room.

She leapt forward, delivering a flying switch-kick that caught the second man squarely in the throat. He gagged, tumbling backward into a row of display shelves, crashing to the floor in a tangle of splintered wood and shattered glass.

That left Jake.

Jake stood near the front door, his hands trembling violently as he gripped the baseball bat. The color had completely drained from his face. In less than four seconds, the two professional musclemen Vance had sent had been neutralized with clinical, terrifying brutality.

Lily walked toward him, her footsteps silent on the wood floor.

"S-Stay back!" Jake screamed, raising the bat with shaking hands. "I swear to God, I'll swing!"

Lily didn't stop. She closed the distance.

Jake swung the bat in a frantic, wild downward arc.

Lily caught his forearm with an open-palm parry, deflecting the swing effortlessly. In the same motion, she stepped inside, trapped his wrist, and twisted his arm into a brutal standing shoulder lock.

The bat fell from his paralyzed fingers.

Lily forced Jake down to his knees, leaning down until her breath brushed his ear.

"Where is Vance?" she whispered.

"I-In the warehouse district!" Jake sobbed, tears of agony and terror spilling down his cheeks. "The old iron foundry on 4th Street! He's hosting a private underground card tonight! Please, don't break my arm!"

Lily released the pressure on his shoulder, shoved him onto his stomach, and stepped over his trembling body.

"If you ever show your face in this town again, Jake," Lily said, walking toward the door, "I won't be so gentle."
