Chapter 4 - The Vengeance of Reynolds

While the internet was busy turning Lily into a folk legend, Jake Reynolds was stewing in a toxic mixture of bruised ego, ruined credibility, and white-hot fury.

His dojo, *Reynolds Elite Martial Arts*, was in ruins. By noon the next day, six parents had already called to cancel their children's memberships. Local martial artists were driving past the storefront, honking their horns, and shouting insults out of car windows. The video of him crashing onto the mat like an oversized sack of potatoes had turned him into an international meme.

Jake sat in his private office at the back of the gym, nursing a fractured rib and guzzling whiskey from a paper cup.

The door to the office opened without a knock.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit walked in, flanked by two burly men with broken noses and cauliflower ears. The man in the suit wore gold cufflinks and held a silver-tipped cane, his eyes calculating and reptilian.

"Get out," Jake snarled, struggling to stand up. "Gym's closed."

The man in the suit chuckled dryly. "Sit down, Reynolds. You look pathetic enough without attempting to play tough guy."

"Do you know who I am?" Jake hissed.

"You're a third-rate kickboxer who bought a strip-mall franchise and lost a fight to a mother in sweatpants," the man replied smoothly, sitting down in the leather chair across from Jake. "My name is Marcus Vance."

Jake froze. Even in his suburban bubble, he knew the name Marcus Vance. Vance ran the largest regional promotion in the country and had deep ties to both legitimate sports networks and the shadowy, high-stakes underground fight circuits.

"Mr. Vance," Jake stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating. "What are you doing here?"

"I saw your humiliating little video," Vance said, leaning forward on his cane. "Most people watched it to laugh at you. I watched it because I recognized the woman who broke your pride."

"Lily Carter," Jake spat bitterly. "She humiliated me in front of my students! She ruined my business! I’m going to sue her for assault. I'll take her house, her car, everything she owns!"

Vance smiled, a cold, humorless parting of his lips. "You won't sue anyone, Jake. Because in the video, you clearly instigated the spar, threw the first punch, and agreed to the match. You have no legal case. But you do have something far more valuable to me."

"What?"

"Leverage," Vance said softly. "Lily Carter owes me a championship fight. Thirteen years ago, her brother died and she ran away like a coward, costing me seven million dollars in lost sponsorships and television revenue. I spent a decade looking for her, but she scrubbed her records and vanished into the suburbs."

Vance reached into his coat and tossed an envelope onto Jake's desk. The flap was open, revealing stacks of crisp hundred-dollar bills.

"That's fifty thousand dollars," Vance whispered. "A down payment. I want you to make her life unbearable. I want her to feel cornered. Harass her. Threaten her peace. Drive her to the point where her only way out... is to step into my ring."

Jake looked down at the money, then up at Vance’s cold, reptilian eyes. A dark, vengeful smile crept onto his bruised face.

"Consider it done, Mr. Vance."
