Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Porch

That night, the intimidation began in earnest.
It started at midnight with a rock shattering the front window of Lily’s design studio on the ground floor. Wrapped around the stone was a printed screenshot of the viral video with the words: *PAY THE DEBT OR SUFFER.*
Two hours later, an unmarked black sedan with tinted windows parked across the street from Lily’s house, its headlights extinguished, its engine idling low.
Lily stood by the second-story window in the dark, watching the car through the slit in the blinds. Sarah sat on the edge of the hallway floor, wrapped in a blanket, shivering not from the cold, but from the terrifying realization that their quiet life had been shattered.
"Mom," Sarah whispered, her voice choked with tears. "Is it my fault? Because I took karate? Because of that dojo?"
Lily turned away from the window, walked over, and knelt down in front of her daughter. She cupped Sarah’s face in her calloused hands, gently wiping away the tears.
"Never think that," Lily said firmly. "None of this is your fault. Those men are cowards who prey on the weak. Sensei Jake humiliated children because he's small inside. Marcus Vance threatens families because he's greedy. You did nothing wrong, Sarah. Nothing."
"Then why won't they leave us alone?"
"Because bullies only stop when they are made to understand, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are far more dangerous than they are."
Lily stood up. A transformation was occurring within her. The exhaustion, the suburban docility, the self-imposed passivity that she had worn like a heavy coat for thirteen years—she let it drop to the floor.
Her brother Leo had always told her: *The storm doesn't ask permission to blow, Lily. It just clears the land.*
"Pack a bag, Sarah," Lily commanded softly.
"Where are we going?"
"You are going to stay with your Aunt Clara two towns over. Her house has private security, and nobody knows her connection to us."
"What about you?" Sarah looked up at her mother with mounting panic. "Aren't you coming with me?"
Lily looked down at her hands. The knuckles were scarred, the veins prominent and strong.

"No," Lily said. "If I run, they will follow us forever. It's time to end this."
