Chương 8 - The Breach

Despite the political victory in the ballroom, the threat was far from over.

At 2:00 a.m. that night, the storm over the Hudson Valley reached its peak. Thunder cracked directly above the stone estate, shaking the glass panes in their iron frames. Sheet rain poured down in blinding torrents, cutting visibility along the perimeter fence to near zero.

Inside the security control room in the basement, Marco stood before a bank of twenty high-definition monitors.

Suddenly, three screens on the northern boundary went completely black.

"Boss," Marco said into his radio, his voice tense. "We just lost cameras seven, eight, and nine along the rose garden wall. Motion sensors are flickering."

Upstairs in the primary security hallway, Alessandro was already fully armed. He wore a tactical vest over his dark shirt, a custom assault rifle slung across his chest, his face set in stone.

"Vincent," Alessandro muttered into his mic. "The old bastard knows he’s ruined. He’s not trying to win a war anymore. He’s looking for revenge."

"He sent a heavy team, Boss," Marco reported, his voice filled with gunfire coming through the comms from the outer gate. "At least twenty men. They used explosives to breach the side gate!"

Alessandro turned instantly toward the stairs leading to the east wing. "Leo! Take six men and lock down the nursery! Nobody enters or leaves that wing without my direct code!"

"Understood, Don Moretti!" Leo shouted, rushing up the stairs with three heavily armed guards behind him.

In the master suite, Rosaria stood in the center of the room, holding a small silver pistol that Alessandro had given her hours earlier. Lily was awake, sitting in the center of the bed, her large dark eyes wide with confusion, clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest.

"Mommy?" Lily asked, her voice small and trembling as the distant sound of automatic gunfire echoed through the heavy stone walls. "Is that thunder?"

Rosaria walked quickly to the bed, sitting beside her daughter, pulling her close into a protective embrace.

"Yes, my sweet girl," Rosaria whispered, kissing the top of Lily’s head, her eyes fixed on the reinforced oak door of the suite. "It’s just thunder. Daddy is taking care of it."

Downstairs, the grand foyer became a war zone.

The heavy front doors bowed under a breaching charge, blowing inward with a deafening CRACK that sent wooden splinters flying across the marble floor. Eight heavily armed Chicago mercenaries rushed through the smoke, their weapons raised.

Before they could clear the doorway, Alessandro stepped out from behind the grand marble pillar at the base of the stairs.

His rifle roared into the smoky darkness.

With terrifying, clinical precision, Alessandro dropped three men in less than two seconds. Marco and four Moretti guards opened fire from the upper balcony, raining down a lethal wall of lead that completely trapped the remaining intruders in the foyer.

Through the smoke and muzzle flashes, a figure stepped through the shattered front entrance.

It was Vincent Romano.

He was wearing a dark raincoat, his face pale and wild with desperation, holding a heavy revolver in his gloved hand. Behind him stood his chief lieutenant, a giant of a man armed with a shotgun.

"MORETTI!" Vincent roared, his voice crazy with rage. "You ruined me! You took everything I built in Chicago!"

Alessandro stepped out into the open, dropping his empty rifle magazine and letting it hit the marble floor with a sharp metallic clatter. He pulled his matte-black pistol from his side holster, his eyes locking onto Vincent with lethal calm.

"You ruined yourself, Vincent," Alessandro said, his voice cutting clearly through the smoke and ringing alarms. "You came into my house. You threatened my child. You brought this end upon yourself."

Vincent raised his revolver, his face twisted in madness. "I’ll see you in hell, Moretti!"

Before Vincent could pull the trigger, a single, sharp gunshot echoed from the top of the grand staircase.

Vincent’s eyes went wide. The revolver slipped from his lifeless fingers as he crumpled to his knees, a clean red hole blossoming in the center of his chest. He collapsed forward onto the marble floor, motionless.

Behind him, his remaining lieutenant dropped his shotgun and raised his hands in immediate surrender.

Alessandro looked up toward the top of the stairs.

Standing on the landing, holding a heavy hunting rifle that had belonged to Alessandro’s father, was Mr. Bruno. The old butler’s hands were steady, his face calm and solemn as he lowered the smoking barrel.

"Nobody threatens the Moretti family under this roof, Boss," Mr. Bruno said quietly, echoing Alessandro’s own words from the previous morning.

Alessandro slowly lowered his pistol, looking at the old man, and nodded once with deep, quiet respect.

"Clean this up, Marco," Alessandro ordered softly. "The storm is over."
