Chương 6 - The Shadows of the Past

Night fell over the Hudson River like a heavy velvet curtain. The rain had returned, tapping rhythmically against the tall stained-glass windows of the east wing.

Inside the master suite, a fire crackled in the wide stone fireplace, casting a warm, flickering glow across the dark wood furniture and deep velvet rugs.

Lily was fast asleep in the center of a massive king-sized bed, wrapped in a plush cream blanket. Bun, her stuffed rabbit, was tucked under her arm, and her tiny hand was still loosely holding the gold button she had found that morning.

Rosa stood by the glass doors leading to the balcony, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea. She wore a soft wool sweater and dark trousers—clothes that had been brought up by a remarkably respectful Mr. Bruno hours earlier.

The heavy door of the suite opened softly, and Alessandro walked in.

He had removed his jacket and holster, rolling the sleeves of his white shirt up to his elbows. He looked tired, the lines around his dark eyes deeper than usual, but the lethal tension that had filled him during the confrontation in the study was gone.

He walked quietly across the room, stopping beside the bed to look down at his sleeping daughter.

For several minutes, he didn't say a word. He simply watched the small, steady rise and fall of Lily’s chest. Slowly, carefully, he reached down with a broad, calloused finger and gently stroked the little girl’s soft cheek.

Lily stirred slightly in her sleep, leaning her face into his finger, letting out a tiny, contented sigh.

A rare, genuine smile touched Alessandro’s lips.

"She looks so peaceful," he whispered softly, turning to face Rosa.

"She doesn't know about empires or rivalries," Rosa replied, stepping away from the balcony. "To her, the world is just duck socks, stuffed rabbits, and gold buttons."

Alessandro turned around, leaning his hip against the edge of the wooden bedpost. He looked at Rosa with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.

"Why didn't you tell me the night we were together, Rosa?" he asked softly.

Rosa’s breath hitched. Her mind travelled back four years, to a cold, stormy night very much like this one.

Alessandro had returned from a bloody skirmish in Brooklyn, wounded in the shoulder, his eyes filled with the terrible burden of a man who had been forced to kill to keep his family alive. Rosa, who was working late in the main house, had helped patch his wound in secret. In the quiet, desperate darkness of his private room, surrounded by death and fear, two broken people had found a moment of fierce, unbridled warmth.

It had been a single night. A secret kept in the shadows.

"That night, you were a man carrying the weight of the world on your back," Rosa said softly, walking closer to him. "And I was a woman running from ghosts. If I had told you who I was, you would have treated me like an asset. A political alliance. A chess piece to be used against Chicago or Europe. I didn't want to be a chess piece, Alessandro. Not to you."

Alessandro looked down at his hands—hands that had ordered deaths, signed multi-million-dollar deals, and held guns since he was eighteen years old.

"You were never a chess piece, Rosa," he murmured, his voice laced with a deep, quiet sincerity. "That night... it was the only time in five years I felt like a human being instead of a Don."

He stood up straight, taking two slow steps toward her until he was standing directly in front of her. The smell of rain, expensive tobacco, and cedarwood wrapped around her senses.

"Vincent Romano left the estate an hour ago," Alessandro said quietly. "He took Isabella and his guards. But he won't go back to Chicago quietly. He knows who you are now. He knows that if you claim the Mendes estate, the Moretti family will control the entire Eastern seaboard and the European shipping lines."

"He will strike," Rosa said, her voice laced with fear.

"He will try," Alessandro corrected, reaching out to gently touch her face, his thumb softly tracing her jawline. "But he forgets where we are. He forgets what I am willing to do to protect what is mine."

"Alessandro..." Rosa breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Four years ago, you hid in my house to stay safe, Rosaria," Alessandro whispered, his dark eyes burning into hers. "Now, I am offering you something better than a hiding place."

May you like

"What?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"A throne," Alessandro answered. "Beside me."
