Chapter 8 - The Viper's Last Stand

The attack on Michigan Avenue shattered any remaining illusion of peace.
By nightfall, Chicago had become an occupied city. Adrian mobilized every soldier, every captain, and every asset in the Moretti network. The shipping docks were seized; the North Side warehouses controlled by the Petrov syndicate were raided and burned to the ground within hours. Local law enforcement, recognizing that Adrian was waging a total war of extermination, retreated to their precincts, letting the underworld devour itself.
I was kept inside the penthouse under maximum lockdown. Steel shutters sealed the panoramic windows, turning the glass palace into an impenetrable fortress.
Around midnight, Matteo entered the living room where I sat wrapped in a heavy blanket, sipping warm tea that tasted like ash. Adrian had not returned since bringing me back from the boutique.
"Where is he, Matteo?" I asked, looking up with tired, anxious eyes.
Matteo looked worn, his shoulder bandaged beneath a fresh shirt. "He is finishing it, Miss Hayes. Julian Petrov was cornered at an abandoned freight terminal near the Calumet River."
"Is he safe?"
Matteo paused, looking at me with a profound, solemn respect. "In ten years of serving Adrian Moretti, I have never seen him fight the way he fought today. Men fight for territory, they fight for money, and they fight for pride. But a man fighting for the woman he loves and the child she carries... there is nothing on this earth more lethal."
*The woman he loves.*
The words hung in the air, heavy and true. Adrian had never spoken those three specific words to me, but every breath he took, every drop of blood he spilled, and every wall he erected around me screamed it louder than any romantic declaration ever could.
A sudden commotion at the private elevator interrupted our conversation.
The elevator doors chimed and slid open. Two Moretti soldiers dragged a battered, disheveled figure into the foyer, tossing him onto the polished marble floor.
I stood up, letting the blanket fall.
The man groveling on the floor looked up, bloody and bruised. It was Nathan.
"Claire!" Nathan gasped, his voice cracked with terror. "Claire, please! Tell them to let me go! I didn't know they were going to shoot at you! I swear to God, I didn't know!"
I walked slowly toward him, stopping several feet away. "What did you do, Nathan?"
"I was desperate," Nathan sobbed, tears cutting lines through the dirt on his cheeks. "The bank took everything. My father had a heart attack this morning. Petrov promised me two million dollars if I just tracked your security detail! He told me he was only going to kidnap you to force Adrian into a trade agreement! He promised no one would get hurt!"
A wave of profound revulsion washed over me. This was the man I had once loved. This was the man I had planned to marry, the man I had thought was a pillar of success and decency. In reality, he was nothing more than a hollow coward who would sell a pregnant woman to wolves to save his own shallow skin.
"You knew I was carrying a child," I said, my voice dead and emotionless. "You knew bullets would fly, and you pointed them straight at me."
"Claire, please! Have mercy! For the sake of the years we spent together!"
The elevator chimed once more.
The heavy doors slid open, and Adrian stepped out.
The room froze. Adrian was spattered with blood, his black tactical shirt torn, his eyes completely hollowed out by the cold reality of slaughter. Behind him, the night was over; Julian Petrov and his son no longer existed in this world.
Adrian’s gaze locked onto Nathan cowering on the floor.
"Get him up," Adrian commanded softly.
The two guards hoisted Nathan to his feet. Nathan’s knees buckled, his pants visibly soaked in urine as sheer terror overtook his nervous system.
"Adrian," Nathan whimpered. "Mr. Moretti... please..."
Adrian didn't look at Nathan. He looked at me. He walked past the groveling coward until he stood directly in front of me, taking my face between his large, bruised hands.
"Are you unharmed?" he asked, his voice rough and gravelly.
"I am safe," I whispered, reaching up to cover his hands with mine. "Because of you."
Adrian closed his eyes for a second, letting out a long, shuddering breath, before turning his attention back to Nathan.
"Petrov is dead," Adrian said, his voice flat. "Every soldier who fired a bullet toward that boutique is dead. And now, Vance, there is only you."
"Claire, don't let him do this!" Nathan screamed, struggling weakly against the guards. "You're not a killer, Claire! Tell him to stop!"
I looked at Nathan, and then I looked at the man who had laid his life on the line to shield me from the horrors of the world.
"Nathan," I said calmly. "You came into my life, took my dignity, betrayed my trust, and then tried to trade my life and my daughter's life for money. You don't get to ask me for mercy."
I turned my back on him and walked toward the bedroom.

"Take him to the harbor," Adrian commanded behind me, his voice carrying the finality of an executioner's axe. "Let the lake take what the city no longer wants."
