Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Syndicate

The penthouse was an expanse of marble, dark walnut, and floor-to-ceiling glass that opened up to a panoramic view of Lake Michigan. It was breathtaking, pristine, and intensely fortified.

Within two hours of my arrival, a discreet medical team arrived—not at a clinic, but right inside the penthouse. A doctor and two nurses, vetted thoroughly by Adrian's organization, conducted a complete, non-invasive examination in a lavish guest suite. They drew blood, checked my vitals, and administered a specialized IV bag of hydration and vitamins to combat the mild malnutrition I had suffered over the past few weeks of skimping on meals.

Adrian stood in the doorway the entire time, his arms crossed over his chest, listening intently as Dr. Harris explained my condition.

"She is carrying a healthy baby," Dr. Harris stated, adjusting his glasses. "However, Miss Hayes is slightly underweight for twenty weeks, and her iron levels are noticeably depleted. With proper nutrition, rest, and minimal stress, she will recover quickly."

"She will have the best of everything," Adrian said simply. "Order whatever supplements she needs. Have a private chef coordinate her meals."

"Of course, Mr. Moretti."

When the medical staff left, the enormous penthouse felt cavernous once more. I sat on the edge of the oversized bed, clad in a comfortable cashmere sweater and silk pants that Adrian’s personal assistant had miraculously procured in my exact size within forty-five minutes.

The door clicked open, and Adrian walked in carrying a silver tray with a bowl of warm broth, sliced fruit, and whole-grain bread.

"Eat," he commanded softly, placing the tray on the nightstand beside me.

I looked at the food, my stomach growling traitorously, but my pride held me back. "Adrian, you cannot keep me here like a prisoner."

"You are not a prisoner," he replied, taking a seat in the velvet armchair across from the bed. He leaned back, stretching his long legs out. "The doors are unlocked. You are free to walk through them whenever you please."

"And what happens if I walk out to hail a cab back to Pilsen?"

"My men will follow you, ensure no one approaches you, pay your landlord three times the value of the building to evict the heroin addicts living on the first floor, and install reinforced steel doors on your apartment," he said without missing a beat. "Or, you can stay here, where you have a full kitchen, top-tier medical care, and zero risk of your miserable ex-fiancé or anyone else cornering you."

I looked at him, searching for deceit, but found only overwhelming, suffocating resolve.

"Why do you care so much?" I asked, my voice cracking slightly. "We shared one night. One reckless night. Men in your position usually pay women off to make inconvenient pregnancies disappear."

Adrian’s expression darkened, an icy stillness settling over his features that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Never say that to me again," he said, his voice dropping an octave. "I was raised in this life, Claire. My father was a cold bastard who viewed children as leverage and women as ornaments. I swore on my mother's grave that if I ever fathered a child, they would know their father’s strength, their father’s presence, and their father’s absolute protection."

He stood up, walking toward the window to look out over the glittering city lights.

"And as for you," he murmured, his broad back turned to me. "You were not just 'one night.' I looked for you for five months. Do you think a man like me expends time and resources on women he considers disposable?"

Before I could answer, a soft knock sounded at the door.

Adrian called out permission, and a man in his early thirties with sharp features and a tailored grey suit entered. It was Matteo, Adrian's underboss and closest confidant.

Matteo cast a respectful, brief nod in my direction before leaning toward Adrian. "Boss. We have a development."

"Speak," Adrian commanded, not bothering to move away from the bed.

Matteo hesitated slightly, glancing at me before continuing. "Nathan Vance and his father went to the authorities two hours ago. They attempted to file a complaint for intimidation and extortion regarding their development licenses."

Adrian smiled, a cold, humorless curve of his lips. "And?"

"The police captain threw the paperwork in the shredder before Nathan finished speaking," Matteo said smoothly. "However, Vance was desperate. He reached out to an old contact of his father’s. Julian Petrov."

The temperature in the room seemed to plummet. I didn't know much about the Chicago underworld, but even a civilian who read local news knew the name Petrov. The Russian syndicate operated on the North Side, locked in a tense, decades-long cold war with the Moretti family over control of the shipping ports.

"Nathan went to the Russians?" Adrian asked, his voice disturbingly calm.

"He tried to offer them insider equity on the riverfront development project in exchange for protection from us," Matteo reported. "Petrov hasn't agreed yet, but our contacts say Petrov’s son was asking questions about why you personally intervened in a grocery store dispute. Word is spreading, Adrian. People know there is a woman."

Matteo looked directly at me.

"They know she is pregnant."

A cold tendril of dread coiled in my gut. My hand moved instinctively to my stomach. By stepping in to save me from Nathan’s petty cruelty, Adrian had inadvertently placed me square in the crosshairs of his deadliest enemies.

Adrian remained silent for three agonizing seconds. When he turned back to Matteo, his eyes were devoid of any mercy.

"Tell the Vance family their loans are called immediately. By tomorrow noon, their bank accounts are frozen."

"Understood."

"And Matteo?"

"Yes, Boss?"

"Arrange a table at the Drake Hotel tomorrow night for the Children's Hospital Gala."

Matteo blinked, surprised. "The public gala? Boss, Petrov will be in attendance. Every politician, judge, and captain will be there."

May you like

"Good," Adrian replied, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Then they will all be present when I introduce Claire Hayes as my fiancée."
