Chapter 5 - Whispers and Heartbeats

"You cannot be serious," I said the moment Matteo closed the door behind him.

I stood up from the bed, the silver tray forgotten. "Your fiancée? Adrian, you are dragging me deeper into a world I don't understand, surrounded by men who want to kill you!"

Adrian crossed the room in three long strides, closing the distance between us until I was forced to look up into his fierce, unyielding gaze. He didn't touch me, but the sheer wall of his presence pinned me in place.

"Listen to me carefully, Claire," he said, his voice low and vibrating with intensity. "In my world, shadows are dangerous. If you remain a hidden woman—a secret kept in a penthouse—you are perceived as an illicit weakness. You become a target that can be snatched from an alleyway to leverage against me."

He stepped closer, his chest nearly brushing mine.

"A secret mistress is a target. The declared future wife of Adrian Moretti is untouchable. If they touch you as my fiancée, they are declaring total, merciless war on the entire Moretti family. Not even Julian Petrov is suicidal enough to cross that line without provocation."

I swallowed the lump in my throat. "And what about what I want? What about my life?"

"What did your life look like yesterday, Claire?" he asked, not with cruelty, but with stark, unvarnished honesty. "Counting pennies for milk? Working two remote data-entry jobs until your hands cramped, praying your landlord wouldn't raise the rent? Being humiliated by a spineless coward who threw you away?"

His words stung because they were true. Every single word was a mirror reflecting the desperate, exhausting survival game I had been playing for five months.

"I had my dignity," I whispered, tears pricking the corners of my eyes.

Adrian raised his hand, his thumb gently catching a stray tear before it could fall down my cheek. "You still have it. More of it than anyone in this city. You will walk into that room tomorrow night dripping in diamonds, your head held high, and the entire city of Chicago will bow to you."

"I don't care about diamonds, Adrian."

"I know," he said softly, his voice softening in a way that made my chest ache. "That is why you are the only woman who will ever wear them beside me."

The next morning brought a flurry of activity that felt like a dream. Stylists, tailors, and jewelers arrived at the penthouse under armed escort. They moved with hushed efficiency, taking my measurements, draping fabrics of emerald, midnight blue, and deep burgundy against my skin.

Through it all, Adrian worked from his mahogany-paneled office at the end of the hall, the heavy oak doors left deliberately ajar so he could watch the proceedings while taking clipped, authoritative phone calls.

At two in the afternoon, a portable ultrasound technician arrived, accompanied again by Dr. Harris. Adrian immediately terminated his call, hung up the receiver, and entered the bedroom.

"You don't have to be here for this," I said quietly as the nurse squeezed the warm gel onto my lower abdomen.

Adrian pulled a chair close to the edge of the bed and sat down. "There is nowhere else I would rather be."

The technician moved the plastic wand across my skin. For a moment, there was only the hollow whoosh of electronic static. Then, without warning, a rapid, rhythmic pulsing filled the quiet room.

*Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.*

It sounded like a galloping horse, wild, fierce, and entirely alive.

I let out a wet, breathless laugh, my tears spilling over freely now. "That's..."

"That is your baby's heartbeat," the technician said with a warm smile, adjusting the monitor so we could see the screen. "Strong, perfectly regular. One hundred and forty-eight beats per minute."

On the grey-and-white screen, the faint outline of a curled, perfect little form flickered into view. A tiny hand, fingers splayed, moved against the amniotic sac.

I looked over at Adrian.

The ruthless don was utterly captivated. His knuckles were white where he gripped the armrests of his chair, his jaw slack, his eyes fixed on the small flickering monitor as if looking upon the creation of the universe itself.

He slowly reached out, his hand trembling slightly—the first time I had ever seen even a hint of tremor in him—and clasped my fingers tightly.

"A son or a daughter?" Adrian asked, his voice raw, thick with emotion.

"Would you like to know?" the technician asked, glancing at us both.

I looked at Adrian, and in that shared glance, something fundamental shifted between us. The wall of suspicion, of fear, of past betrayals cracked down the center. He wasn't just a mafia don orchestrating a tactical defense; he was the father of my child, completely undone by the miracle of a tiny beating heart.

"Tell us," Adrian whispered.

The technician smiled brightly. "It's a girl, Mr. Moretti. You have a daughter."

Adrian closed his eyes for a long moment, lifting my hand to his mouth and pressing a firm, lingering kiss against my knuckles.

May you like

"A daughter," he murmured against my skin. When he opened his eyes, they burned with a terrifying, beautiful resolve. "A princess. And I will burn this city to the ground before I let anyone harm a single hair on her head."
