Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The heavy rain outside created a deafening roar against the metal roof of the terminal warehouse as six federal maritime agents, led by Special Agent Harris, stepped inside with flashlights drawn.

Beside Agent Harris stood Marcus Marlowe, wearing a slick black raincoat, a triumphant grin plastered across his face.

And behind him stood Evan.

"Agent Harris," Vincent’s deep voice echoed through the vast, empty warehouse as he stepped out from behind a row of wooden crates, holding his hands comfortably in his coat pockets. "To what do I owe the pleasure of an unannounced midnight visit to my private terminal?"

Agent Harris held up a white legal document. "We received a verified corporate tip regarding three unregistered shipping containers carrying illegal contraband, Mr. Marlowe. Under Section 8 of the Federal Maritime Security Act, we are seizing Terminal 4."

Marcus stepped forward, pointing a finger at me as I walked out beside Vincent.

"The manager of this terminal is Claire Hayes," Marcus announced loudly to the agents. "Her signature is on the master entry log for the Rotterdam shipment. If there is illegal cargo on this dock, she is the primary corporate officer responsible!"

Agent Harris turned his spotlight onto me, blinding me for a brief second. "Ms. Hayes, you will need to step forward and—"

"Lower the light, Harris," Vincent commanded, his voice dropping into a tone of such absolute, lethal authority that the agent instinctively lowered the beam.

Vincent took two slow, deliberate steps forward, placing his towering frame directly between me and the federal agents.

"Ms. Hayes has no connection to Terminal 4’s secondary manifests," Vincent stated clearly. "Every document associated with this berth is signed exclusively by the Chairman of the Board. Me."

Marcus sneered. "Don't try to take the fall for your mistress, Vincent! We have the digital log! Evan saw her sign the authorization form on Friday!"

Vincent turned his cold, terrifying gaze onto his son.

Evan flinched under his father's look, stepping back into the shadows of the warehouse.

"Is that true, Evan?" Vincent asked softly, his voice cutting through the sound of the rain like a razor. "Did you see her sign it?"

Evan’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. He looked at me—at the woman he had claimed to love, standing in the cold warehouse, facing federal prison because of his petty, vindictive jealousy.

"Answer your father, Evan!" Marcus barked nervously.

"I..." Evan stammered, his eyes watering as he looked at the floorboards. "I... I didn't see her sign it."

"Evan!" Marcus screamed, turning on his nephew in sheer disbelief. "What are you doing? We had her!"

"Shut up, Marcus!" Evan suddenly yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. "Just shut up!"

Vincent pulled a sleek silver flash drive from his pocket and tossed it casually to Agent Harris.

"On that drive, Agent Harris," Vincent said smoothly, "you will find the complete, unredacted corporate records for Marcus Marlowe’s private shell companies in Panama. You will also find proof that Marcus attempted to bribe a federal customs officer six months ago to frame my operations director."

Marcus went deathly pale. "That's... that's a lie! That drive is forged!"

"My private security team intercepted your communications two weeks ago, Marcus," Vincent said coldly. "I gave you every opportunity to walk away from this company with your dignity intact. You chose to target the woman I love. And for that, you are finished."

Agent Harris reviewed the screen on his hand-held reader, his face turning solemn. He turned to his officers.

"Arrest Marcus Marlowe for corporate fraud and filing a false federal report," Harris ordered.

Two agents immediately stepped forward, grabbing Marcus’s arms and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists as he screamed curses into the rainy night.

Evan stood alone in the center of the vast warehouse, looking like a lost, broken child as his uncle was dragged out into the storm.
