Chapter 2 - The Iron Vault

The rain lashed against the reinforced black windows of Vance Global’s headquarters as the private subterranean elevator descended beneath the foundation of the city. Sixty floors below the executive suites lay Sub-Level 4: Arthur Vance’s personal sanctum, accessible only through a biometric lock calibrated to his unique DNA markers.

Until today.

Standing between Mr. Harlan and Marcus, I held my swollen belly with one hand and pressed my thumb against the biometric glass scanner with the other. A mechanical whir hummed through the steel walls. The panel flashed crimson for a fraction of a second, analyzing my bloodline, before glowing a calm, radiant emerald.

*“Vance Lineage Confirmed. Welcome, Eleanor Vance.”*

The heavy steel vault door hissed open, releasing the dry, chilled air preserved within. Inside lay no stacks of gold bullion or flashy displays of wealth. Instead, the room was lined with floor-to-ceiling server racks, rows of climate-controlled safe-deposit lockers, and a solitary mahogany desk where my father used to spend hours when corporate warfare loomed.

"Your father anticipated Caleb’s ambition three years ago," Harlan said, stepping toward locker 001 and turning a brass dual-key mechanism. "Arthur knew your husband was ambitious, Eleanor. What he didn't realize until six months ago was how truly ruthless Caleb was."

The locker slid open with a muted click. Inside was a single black leather binder and an encrypted biometric thumb drive.

I opened the binder. The first document was a forensic audit detailing five hundred million dollars transferred systematically out of Vance Global’s development funds over the past eighteen months. The destination? Shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands under the joint names of Caleb Sterling and Vanessa Croft.

"Caleb thought he was clever," I murmured, my voice chillingly even. "He thought he could siphon the lifeblood of my father’s empire and leave me with a hollow shell."

"He was preparing to declare Vance Global insolvent the moment your father was buried," Harlan explained, pulling up a digital dossier on his tablet. "With Arthur gone and you deep into your third trimester, Caleb calculated you would be too fragile, too overwhelmed, to contest his appointment as sole receiver."

I looked down at the thumb drive. On its polished silver casing, my father’s initials were engraved: *A.V.*

"And the board?" I asked, looking up at Harlan.

"Six of the nine board members owe their entire careers to Arthur Vance," Harlan replied with a cold gleam in his eyes. "The remaining three were bought by Caleb with promises of offshore dividend shares. Tomorrow morning at eight, Caleb intends to present a forged power of attorney to usurp the presidency."

A sharp kick from my unborn daughter rippled across my stomach. I smoothed my mourning dress, feeling the pulse of pure determination race through my veins.

"Let him come," I whispered. "Marcus, lock down all digital access to the treasury accounts right now. Strip Caleb’s credentials across all Vance servers. If he tries to move even a single dollar tonight, I want the authorities alerted."

"Understood, Madam Chair," Marcus said, snapping his phone to his ear.

I looked around my father’s secret vault one last time. Caleb had thought I was broken because my father died. He forgot that the same blood that built this empire ran through my veins.
