Chapter 10 - The Falling Axe

Before Caleb could cross the threshold of the nursery rug, the heavy oak doors burst inward with a splintering crash.

Marcus charged into the room like a runaway freight train. In a fraction of a second, he caught Caleb’s descending arm, twisting the wrist with an audible snap. The iron poker clattered uselessly across the hardwood floor.

Caleb screamed in agony as Marcus slammed him face-first onto the ground, driving a knee into the small of his back and twisting both of his arms behind him. Two Vance security guards flooded the room with tactical flashlights, zip-tying Caleb’s wrists and ankles in seconds.

"Get him out of my daughter’s room," Eleanor commanded softly, not a single hair out of place.

"You're a monster!" Caleb wheezed, his cheek pressed flat against the polished floor, blood trickling from his split lip. "You and your father! You destroyed me!"

"You destroyed yourself when you mistook kindness for weakness," Eleanor said, looking down at him with utter disgust. "Take him downstairs and hand him over to the federal agents waiting at the gate."

As the guards hauled the thrashing, sobbing Caleb toward the hallway, Harlan stepped into the room, holding an open satellite phone.

"Eleanor," Harlan said, his chest heaving slightly from running up the stairs. "The Department of Justice just raided Kane Tower. Julian Kane has been taken into custody. The logic bomb in the stolen data triggered a full federal audit of his offshore servers. The Vance shipping monopoly is completely secured."

Eleanor let out a long, slow breath. The suffocating tension that had weighed upon her shoulders since the morning of her father's funeral began to dissolve, replaced by the profound, quiet realization of victory.

She turned back toward the window, looking out over the sprawling estate. Her father’s empire was safe. The traitors were eradicated.

Suddenly, a sharp, white-hot spasm gripped her lower abdomen.

Eleanor gasped, clutching the edge of the crib as the air was pulled from her lungs. A warm rush of fluid cascaded down her legs, soaking her silk slippers.

"Harlan..." she gasped, clutching her belly as a second, violent contraction rippled across her torso.

Harlan’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "Eleanor! The baby... you’re four weeks early!"
