Chapter 11 - The Final Contraction

"Call the medical team!" Harlan shouted toward the corridor, his authoritative legal persona completely crumbling into panic. "Get the private ambulance to the front portico immediately!"
Marcus rushed back into the room, his eyes scanning Eleanor’s pale face. "Miss Eleanor, lean on me. We have the estate's private medical wing prepped on the ground floor."
Another contraction tore through Eleanor, so intense it brought her to her knees. She gripped Marcus’s forearm with startling strength, breathing through her teeth just as she had practiced in the prenatal classes her husband had refused to attend.
"The baby... she’s coming now," Eleanor whispered, sweat immediately beading across her forehead.
Marcus scooped her up carefully in his arms and carried her down the grand staircase, with Harlan trailing behind, frantically barking orders into his radio. They reached the estate’s private medical wing—a state-of-the-art emergency suite Arthur Vance had built during his final years of illness.
Dr. Reynolds, the Vance family physician, was already waiting with two pediatric nurses.
"Get her onto the bed," Dr. Reynolds instructed, snapping on sterile gloves. "Her vitals are elevated, but the fetal heartbeat is strong. Eleanor, look at me. You are fully dilated. We are delivering this child tonight."
Eleanor lay back against the pillows, her knuckles gripping the stainless-steel rails. The monitor beside her beeped in rapid, frantic rhythm, echoing the fierce kicks within her womb. Every fiber of her being felt stretched to the absolute limit. She had fought off corporate raiders, corrupt directors, and a treacherous husband—but this was the battle for life itself.
"Push, Eleanor!" Dr. Reynolds urged.
She bore down, crying out through gritted teeth, channeling all the grief of losing her father, all the rage of Caleb’s betrayal, and all the fierce, protective love for the innocent soul fighting to enter the world.
*Bzzt.*
Suddenly, the lights flickered violently.
The steady hum of the estate’s medical monitors stuttered.
*Click. Thrum.*
Total darkness engulfed the room as the estate's entire primary power grid collapsed. The backup red emergency lights hummed to life, bathing the delivery suite in an ominous, blood-red glow.
"What happened to the generator?!" Harlan shouted from the doorway.
"Someone cut the auxiliary lines," Marcus’s voice crackled through the security radio, static hissing violently. *"We have a breach at the southern transformer! It wasn't Caleb—"*
Before Marcus could finish his sentence, the heavy steel security doors of the medical wing slid slowly open.
Eleanor gasped, another agonizing contraction tearing through her body as she struggled to lift her head from the pillows.
Through the red-lit doorway walked a woman silhouette, holding a silver master security keycard. High heels clicked slowly, rhythmically, against the sterile floor.
It was not Vanessa Croft.

The woman stepped into the crimson light, lowering a silk headscarf to reveal a face Eleanor hadn't seen in over ten years—a face identical to her late father's, but twisted with a cold, triumphant smile.
"Hello, little niece," Arthur Vance’s exiled, disinherited sister purred, looking directly at Eleanor’s trembling hands. "Did you really think Caleb was working alone?"
