Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Thread

Late that evening, after the last guests had departed and the ballroom lights were dimmed, Daniel and I walked through the quiet gardens behind the hotel.
The night air was warm, smelling of fresh jasmine and blooming roses. The sound of a nearby fountain drifted through the darkness, creating a peaceful, soothing backdrop to the quiet night.
I took off my high heels, holding them in one hand, and walked barefoot across the cool grass, feeling the soft earth beneath my feet.
"You know," Daniel said, taking my shoes from my hand so I could walk comfortably, "when I got your call six months ago... when you told me she tore your dress... I thought I was coming to save you."
I stopped walking and turned to look at him under the soft glow of the garden lanterns. "And what did you find when you got here?"
"I found a woman who had already laid the entire trap herself," Daniel smiled, reaching out to wind his arm around my waist, drawing me close against his chest. "I just brought the heavy artillery."
I laughed, resting my hands against his crisp shirtfront. "I needed you, Daniel. I could have exposed the fraud on my own, but having you walk through those doors... having you wrap your coat around me and tell the world who I was... that gave me the strength to finish it."
"You never needed my strength, Evelyn," Daniel said softly, his eyes searching mine with intense tenderness. "You were always the strongest person in every room you walked into. You just needed someone to stand beside you while you showed the world."
He leaned down and kissed me—a slow, deep, passionate kiss that wiped away twenty years of pain, isolation, and doubt, replacing them with a future that was entirely ours.
When he pulled back, he looked down at the back of my gown, tracing his thumb gently over the brilliant diamond clasp securing the blue silk behind my shoulders.

"Indestructible," he whispered.
"Indestructible," I agreed.
