Chapter 3 - The Audit Unveiled

A wave of whispered shock rippled through the two hundred guests. Executives from rival hotel chains, city council members, and high-society journalists exchanged frantic looks. The woman they had treated as an invisible ghost for two decades—the girl forced to sit in the rear pews at corporate galas—was the secret brain behind the largest private equity firm in the state.
My father turned to me, his jaw trembling, his eyes wide with a horrific realization. "Evelyn... you... you reviewed our books?"
"I did, Father," I said, stepping forward beside Daniel, my eyes fixed on Richard Vale. "And what I found was remarkable."
I pulled a thin silver tablet from Daniel’s suit pocket, tapping the screen once. The giant projector screen behind the stage—which had been displaying the glowing emblem of Vale Hospitality—flickered and reset. Seconds later, a detailed spreadsheet displaying forensic banking records, shell company registrations, and wire transfer routing numbers filled the twenty-foot display.
Eleanor Vale let out a sharp, choked gasp, reaching out to clutch her husband's arm so hard her knuckles turned white.
"Over the past thirty-six months," I explained calmly to the audience, "eleven million dollars was diverted from the employee pension fund of Vale Hospitality into a holding company registered in the Seychelles under the name 'Aura Luxury Holdings.' Aura Luxury Holdings has exactly two directors: Eleanor Vale and Vanessa Vale."
"This is a lie! It's a conspiracy!" Eleanor screamed, stepping toward the stage railing. "She forged those records! She’s trying to frame us because Richard left her mother’s estate to us!"
"The records were verified by the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation two hours ago, Mrs. Vale," Daniel said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "The wire transfers were authorized using Vanessa's corporate digital key while she was serving as Vice President of Operations."
Daniel tossed the blue-bound folder onto the stage floor at Vanessa’s feet. The heavy paper hit the wood with a loud bang that echoed like a hammer strike.
"Mercer Global does not do business with thieves," Daniel said. "The expansion contract is cancelled. Effective immediately, all existing credit facilities extended to Vale Hospitality by Mercer Capital are revoked. We are calling in our existing short-term loans, totaling forty-two million dollars, due by midnight."
Richard Vale staggered backward, his hand clutching his chest. "Forty-two million... midnight? We don't have that liquidity! That will bankrupt the company! We'll be forced into liquidation by Monday!"
"Then I suggest you start liquidating your personal assets," Daniel replied. "Starting with the emeralds around your wife's neck."
Vanessa dropped the wireless microphone. It hit the stage floor with a deafening screech of audio feedback that made half the room wince. She looked at her father, then at her mother, and finally at me—the girl whose dress she had ripped ten minutes ago to prove her superiority.
"Evelyn, please..." Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking as tears cut through her heavy makeup. "We're sisters... we're family... you can't destroy our father's life work over a dress..."
"We aren't sisters, Vanessa," I said quietly, looking up at her with cold clarity. "When my mother lay dying in the hospital twenty years ago, you and your mother were picking out furniture for my bedroom. When Father locked me out of the family trust on my eighteenth birthday, you used my college fund to buy your first sports car. You didn't treat me like family then. Don't ask for family mercy now."
Daniel turned to Harrison and raised his hand slightly. "Security. Escort Miss Vale and her mother off the premises. They are trespassing on Mercer-owned real estate."
Four security officers immediately moved up the stage steps. Two of them gripped Vanessa by her upper arms, hoisting her up as she began to kick and scream, her red gown twisting around her ankles. The other two flanked Eleanor, who was sobbing hysterically as she tried to pull her diamond necklace off her neck to hide it in her clutch.
"Get your hands off me!" Vanessa shrieked as the guards dragged her down the center aisle, past two hundred guests who were now filming every second on their smartphones. "Evelyn! You bastard! You ruin everything! Father, do something!"
Richard Vale didn't move. He stood frozen, staring at the screen showing his company's terminal fraud, his face gray and hollow.
As the heavy oak doors closed behind the screaming voices of Vanessa and her mother, a heavy, suffocating silence returned to the room.

Daniel wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side. He looked around the room at the stunned faces of the city's elite.
"The gala is over," Daniel announced. "Good night."
