Chapter 8 - The Cornered Rats

Arthur left my apartment looking like a ghost.

Less than an hour later, my phone began ringing incessantly. It wasn't Richard this time; it was Eleanor. When I finally pressed answer, her voice was hysterical, stripped of all aristocratic composure.

"You treacherous snake!" she screamed down the receiver. "What lies did you feed my husband? Arthur just froze Richard and Amanda’s corporate cards and called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning! What did you do?"

"I simply told the truth, Eleanor," I said, leaning back against my balcony railing, feeling the cool evening breeze against my skin. "The truth you spent three years covering up while treating me like dirt."

"We will crush you!" she shrieked. "We have the best lawyers in the country! You won't see a single cent! You'll be sleeping under a bridge when we're finished with you!"

"Eleanor," I interrupted, my voice dropping to a calm, lethal register. "Your daughter is facing active assault charges. Your son is facing twenty years in federal prison for wire fraud and corporate embezzlement. The only reason your family name isn't on the front page of every financial newspaper tomorrow morning is because I haven't pressed 'send' on my email yet. I suggest you lower your tone when speaking to me."

A choked silence fell over the line. For the first time in her pampered life, Eleanor Vance realized that she held no leverage. The power dynamic had completely inverted.

"What do you want?" she whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed terror.

"I want what is rightfully mine," I said. "And I want Richard at my lawyer’s office tomorrow at ten o'clock sharp, pen in hand. If he is even one minute late, the federal authorities receive the full ledger."

I ended the call without waiting for an answer.
