Chapter 2 - The Shattered Glass

The silence in the opulent dining hall stretched so thin it threatened to snap. Amanda stood trembling, thick brown sauce dripping from her eyelashes down to her ruined bespoke gown, smelling heavily of rosemary and bay leaves. Her shrieks dissolved into incoherent gasps of mortification.

My husband, Richard, rose violently from his chair, knocking over his silver cutlery. "Have you lost your damn mind, Clara?" he roared, his face flushing crimson with humiliation. "Apologize to my sister this instant! Get down on your knees and clean this up!"

His demand was met with absolute silence. I slowly loosened the silk apron strings behind my back, letting the garment drop unceremoniously into the gravy pool puddling near Amanda’s designer heels. For three years, I had shrunk myself to fit into their immaculate, hollow world. I had smiled through passive-aggressive insults, cooked their five-course dinners without thanks, and allowed Richard to treat me as an ornamental maid.

"Apologize?" I echoed, my voice low, clear, and vibrating with an icy calm that caught Richard off guard. "Your sister struck me across the face unprovoked in front of fifty people. If anyone is getting down on their knees tonight, Richard, it isn't going to be me."

Eleanor, recovering from her initial shock, clutched her diamond-encrusted pearls and pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me. "You ungrateful street rat! We took you out of nothing! Security! Escort this hysterical lunatic off my estate!"

Two private guards hesitated at the edge of the room, looking visibly uncomfortable. I reached into my clutch, pulled out my car keys, and looked around the room. The socialites avoided my gaze, suddenly terrified of the woman they had spent years mocking.

"Don't bother," I said calmly, looking Richard dead in the eye. "I’m leaving. And take a good look around this room, Eleanor, because this is the last meal your family will ever get from me for free."

I turned on my heel and walked out, the rhythmic clicking of my heels cutting through their stunned silence like a metronome counting down their downfall.
