Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM MASSACRE

The assault on Daniel’s personal life was only the opening salvo. The true death blow came at 10:00 AM on Monday morning inside the boardroom of Whitmore Capital.
Whitmore Capital was founded thirty years ago by Daniel’s late father, but over the past five years, the firm had suffered catastrophic losses. When Daniel took over as Vice President, the firm was on the brink of insolvency. It had only survived because a silent partner had injected forty million dollars of liquidity into their primary investment vehicle.
Daniel entered the boardroom exhausted, having spent the weekend in a cheap airport motel with Vivian. He wore an off-the-rack suit purchased from a discount department store, his hair unwashed, his eyes bloodshot.
The other six board members were already seated around the glass conference table. At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton, flanked by Margaret Whitmore-Vane—who had flown in overnight from Zurich.
Daniel froze in the doorway, staring at his aunt. "Aunt Margaret? What... what are you doing here?"
Margaret looked at her nephew with absolute disgust. She was a woman of fierce elegance, with silver hair and eyes that had seen through four decades of corporate deception.
"I am here, Daniel," Margaret said in her crisp, transatlantic accent, "to undo the mistake of trusting you with our family legacy."
"Aunt Margaret, listen to me," Daniel stammered, stepping toward the table. "Claire is lying! She’s running a smear campaign to destroy me during our divorce! She tricked you into selling the penthouse—"
"Claire didn't trick me into anything, you pathetic boy," Margaret snapped, cutting him off mid-sentence. "Claire came to Zurich eight months ago because she already knew you were siphoning money to that cheap secretary of yours. She offered to buy the penthouse at twenty percent above market value to give me the liquidity I needed for my European trusts. She protected my assets while you were gambling with the firm’s."
Arthur Pendelton slid a single document across the table toward Daniel.
"Daniel Whitmore," Arthur announced, "the forty million dollar liquidity loan provided to Whitmore Capital in 2022 was originated by Avery Global Holdings. The terms of that agreement clearly state that in the event of moral turpitude, criminal indictment, or insolvency of any key executive, Avery Global retains the right to call the loan due in full within twenty-four hours."
Daniel’s knees literally buckled. He grabbed the back of an empty chair to keep from collapsing. "Forty million? Claire... Claire is Avery Global?"
"Did you really think a firm as broke as yours survived on your trading instincts, Daniel?" Margaret said coldly. "Claire has been underwriting your entire existence. She believed in you. She wanted you to succeed. And in return, you struck her, broke her ribs, and paraded your mistress in front of her."
The Chairman of the Board, an elderly gentleman named Robert Sterling, cleared his throat.
"By unanimous vote of the board of directors," Sterling said, looking Daniel straight in the eye, "Daniel Whitmore is hereby terminated from all executive positions at Whitmore Capital, effective immediately. His shares are forfeit to settle outstanding debts to Avery Global Holdings. Security will escort you off the premises."
Two private security guards entered the boardroom.
Daniel looked around the table at his father’s oldest colleagues. Not a single person would look him in the eye. They looked at him as if he were already dead.
"Wait," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking into a sob. "Please. I have nothing left. My mother has nothing left."

"Then you should have thought about that," Margaret said, looking out the window, "before you raised your hand against the woman who gave you everything."
