Chapter 4 - THE HANDCUFFS CLICK

The room fell into a silence so absolute that the hum of the refrigerator sounded deafening.
Daniel’s face drained of every drop of color. His mouth opened, closed, and opened again, resembling a fish gasping on dry land. "That's... that's impossible. Margaret wouldn't sell our family home to Claire! Claire doesn't have fourteen million dollars! She works at a gallery!"
"Your wife’s grandfather was Charles Avery, the industrial shipping magnate," Arthur said with profound disdain. "Claire chose to live modestly and support your fledgling hedge fund with her quiet influence. You were too blinded by your own narcissism to ever look into who you actually married."
Vivian lunged toward the table, her manicured fingers snatching up the deed. Her eyes darted frantically across the parchment, scanning the signatures, the state seals, and the unmistakable legal description of the property.
"No... no! This is fraud! This little bitch tricked Margaret! Daniel, do something!" Vivian screamed, her voice cracking into shrill hysteria. "She can't kick us out! Where will I live? Where will Vanessa stay?"
"Vanessa won't be staying anywhere near here," I said, leaning on the paramedic’s shoulder as he gently helped me onto the portable gurney.
Sergeant Miller took a step toward Daniel. "Mr. Whitmore, turn around and place your hands behind your back."
Daniel backed away toward the fireplace, panic finally cracking through his polished facade. "Wait! Officer, this is a misunderstanding! I'm a partner at Whitmore Capital! You can't arrest me based on the word of a disgruntled wife and an ambiguous real estate document!"
"You're not being arrested for the real estate document, Mr. Whitmore," Sergeant Miller said, unhooking the heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You're being arrested for felony domestic battery causing significant bodily injury, and witness intimidation. We have the 911 dispatch audio recording your confession and threats."
"Daniel!" Vivian wailed, throwing herself between Daniel and the officers. "You can't touch him! Do you know who we are? We are Whitmores!"
"Ma'am," Miller’s partner barked, grabbing Vivian by the arm and spinning her away, "interfering with an arrest is a Class A misdemeanor. Back away right now, or you’ll be in the car right behind him!"
With a swift, practiced motion, Sergeant Miller seized Daniel’s wrist, twisted it behind his back, and slammed him face-first against the wall. The cold click of the steel cuffs ratcheting shut sounded like a gunshot in the opulent room.
Daniel groaned in pain, his cheek pressed against the expensive silk wallpaper he had bragged about choosing.
"Claire!" Daniel choked out, his eyes wide with genuine terror as he looked back over his shoulder at me. "Claire, please! Think about our reputation! Think about the fund! Call Arthur off! We can talk about this! We can fix this!"
I looked down at him from the gurney, my face devoid of warmth, pity, or regret.

"You told me to remember my place, Daniel," I said softly, as the paramedics began wheeling me toward the elevator. "I finally did."
