Chương 7 - The Master Counterplay

Claudia stepped back, her face twisting in realization as the full scope of her helplessness sank in.
"What do you want?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "What will it take for you to drop the debt demand and give us back the estate?"
"There is nothing you can offer me, Claudia," I said smoothly, leaning forward. "You built an entire existence on the illusion of superiority, treating everyone around you like staff or servants. You thought because I didn't brag about my wealth or drop family names, I was weak. You wanted me to learn humility? Now you are going to learn what actual power looks like."
I picked up a pen and tapped a folder on the side of my desk.
"Option A: You and Ethan sign a voluntary surrender of deed today. You vacate the estate immediately, surrender all claims to the property, and in exchange, I will forgive the $1.5 million in personal invoices. Option B: We proceed to public auction in thirty days. I will buy the estate for pennies on the dollar, execute a forcible eviction through the county court, and sue Ethan personally for the $1.5 million balance until his wages are garnished for the rest of his natural life."
"You... you are a monster," Claudia spat out, tears of humiliation finally spilling over her mascara. "You planned this!"
"I planned a wedding, Claudia," I corrected her coldly. "You planned a public execution of my dignity. I simply adjusted the terms of the contract."
She stared at me for a long, agonizing minute, searching my face for any sign of hesitation, any softness, any remaining lingering affection for her son. She found none. My face was as cold and unyielding as the marble floors I had pulled out of her foyer.
Without another word, Claudia reached into her bag, pulled out a pen with a shaking hand, and signed the voluntary deed surrender forms that Arthur had prepared on the side table.
As she slapped the signed paper back onto my desk, she looked at me with pure, unadulterated venom. "You may have taken our home, Claire Sterling, but you will never have our bloodline, our history, or our respect."
"I don't need your respect, Claudia," I said, placing the signed deed into my desk drawer and locking it. "I own your house. That is more than enough."
She turned around and hurried out of my office, her heels clicking loudly against the hardwood floor, her shoulders slumped in complete defeat.
An hour later, Ethan called my personal phone. I answered on the third ring, putting him on speakerphone while I reviewed blue sheets for a new construction project in the financial district.
"Claire?" his voice was shaky, wet with tears. "My mom told me what happened. She said you made her sign over the estate. Please, Claire... can we just meet for coffee? Just five minutes. I miss you. I made a terrible mistake. I should have opened that gate. I should have stood up to her."
"You should have," I agreed casually. "But you didn't. You made your choice when you told me to stand in the heat for three hours. You chose your mother's approval over your wife's dignity."
"I was afraid of her!" Ethan sobbed into the phone. "She's controlled my entire life! You know how she is!"
"Then this is your opportunity to grow up, Ethan," I said calmly. "Without your mother's estate and without my money, you will finally have to get a real job and build a life for yourself. Consider it a learning experience."
"Claire, please! I have nowhere to go! My mom is moving into a small rental apartment in the suburbs, and she wants me to pay half the rent! I don't even have a savings account!"

"Then I suggest you start writing a resume," I said softly. "Goodbye, Ethan."
I hung up the phone and blocked his number permanently.
