Chương 3 - The Morning After

The sound of diesel engines idling and air brakes releasing shattered the early morning silence of the Whitmore estate.
Within minutes, the heavy front doors of the mansion flew open. Ethan emerged first, wearing a rumpled silk dressing gown, his hair disheveled and his eyes bloodshot. Behind him stepped Claudia, wrapped in an elaborate velvet robe, her face pale with immediate indignation. They had clearly spent the night drinking expensive champagne, expecting me to show up weeping at their door, begging for forgiveness and a second chance at the wedding.
Instead, they stepped out onto the porch to find two massive moving trucks blocking their circular driveway, a crew of twenty workers putting on work gloves, and me, standing calmly at the base of the stairs with a thick black binder in my arms.
"Claire?" Ethan blinked against the bright morning sun, looking thoroughly confused. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why are these trucks here?"
Claudia’s confusion lasted only a second before her expression hardened into her signature look of aristocratic contempt. She walked to the edge of the stone steps, gripping the railing. "Have you lost your mind entirely, girl? Coming here at six in the morning with heavy machinery? If you think this theatrical display is going to make us forget your disrespect yesterday, you are sorely mistaken!"
I took two slow, measured steps up the grand staircase, looking directly into her eyes. "I am not here to ask for your forgiveness, Claudia. I am here to collect my property."
Ethan stepped forward, trying to reach for my wrist, but I stepped back smoothly, avoiding his touch. "Claire, please," he stammered, his voice laced with patronizing frustration. "Mom was just trying to teach you a lesson about family loyalty yesterday. You completely overreacted by canceling the vendors. Do you have any idea how embarrassing it was to explain to the remaining guests why there was no dinner served?"
"You had no dinner because I paid for the catering, Ethan," I said, my voice deadpan and icy. "And since you believed three hours outside on gravel was an appropriate lesson for me, I decided to teach you a lesson of my own. A lesson in basic economics."
I opened the black folder and held up the top document.
"This is an itemized inventory of every single asset, fixture, piece of furniture, and architectural enhancement paid for by my firm, Vanguard Heritage LLC, over the last eighteen months," I declared, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtyard. "Total investment: $1,542,890.12. Since the wedding is officially canceled, all temporary loan terms regarding these assets are void."
Claudia let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Don't be ridiculous! You brought furniture into my home as a gift to your future mother-in-law! You cannot take back gifts, you common little girl!"
"They were not gifts, Claudia," I replied smoothly, pulling out a signed document with a bright blue corporate stamp at the bottom. "This is a revocable bailment agreement, signed by Ethan six months ago when he requested that I furnish the estate for the pre-wedding galas. He signed it as an authorized representative of the estate, agreeing that all items remained the sole property of Vanguard Heritage LLC until the legal union was finalized."
Claudia whirled around to face her son, her eyes wide with sudden panic. "Ethan! What is she talking about? What did you sign?"
Ethan turned pale, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "I... I thought it was just standard paperwork for the insurance company, Mom! She said it was for tax deductions!"
"It was for tax deductions," I corrected politely. "Mine."
I turned toward the crew leader, who was standing by the back of the first truck holding a digital clipboard. "Mark, you may begin with the ground floor. Everything listed on inventory sheet A—the French antique tables, the hand-woven Persian rugs, the crystal chandeliers in the dining hall, and the entire custom kitchen setup. Leave nothing behind."
"Right away, Ms. Sterling!" Mark called out.
Within seconds, the crew began streaming into the mansion, carrying moving straps, dollies, and protective blankets.

Claudia shrieked in horror, running to block the double doors. "Stop them! Stop them right now! Ethan, call the police! She is robbing us! She is robbing the Whitmore family!"
"Call them, Claudia," I said calmly, stepping up onto the porch and looking down at her. "Please, call the police. I brought my lead attorney and the chief legal deputy of the county court with me. They are waiting at the end of the driveway with the official repossession orders. Would you like me to invite them up to review the paperwork with you?"
