Chapter 7 - The Cornered Wolf

The ballroom descended into controlled chaos. High-society friends who had laughed at Vivian’s vicious jokes only an hour earlier subtly stepped back, forming a ring of quarantine around the Vale family.

Adrian’s face had turned a mottled, hideous shade of purple. The veins in his neck bulged against his collar. The refined, arrogant heir had vanished; in his place stood the terrified, violent predator cornered in his own trap.

"You bitch," he snarled, abandoning all pretense of sanity as he lunged toward me. "You stole everything from my safe! You're nothing! You were a pathetic, weeping orphan when I married you, and you're nothing without my name!"

He didn't make it two feet. Thomas stepped forward, his massive frame blocking Adrian instantly, catching Adrian’s wrist in an iron grip that forced the younger man to his knees with a sickening crunch of bone and tendon.

"Hands off the Managing Director, Mr. Vale," Thomas said calmly.

"Adrian!" Vivian screamed, rushing forward, her dyed blonde hair coming undone, her aristocratic elegance melting into hysterical screeching. "Claire! You ungrateful viper! We took you into our home! We gave you our name! My son gave you a life after your father died like a dog in that hospital!"

I looked down at Vivian from my full height. The fear that had kept me awake for a thousand nights, the dread of her icy breakfast table interrogations, the shame she had forced upon me—it all vanished like smoke.

"You gave me a cage, Vivian," I said, my voice steady, freezing, and merciless. "You wore my mother’s jewelry to church. You paid for your country club memberships with my father’s life insurance. And last night, you sat in the front seat of your son’s car and laughed while he struck me across the face and threw me into the mud."

I stepped closer to her, leaning down so only she, Adrian, and the horrified council members could hear my whisper.

"I didn't drown in the storm, Vivian. I became the storm."

Detective Vance—no relation to my father, but a veteran of the white-collar division—walked through the parting crowd, holding a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Adrian Vale? Lila Cruz? You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit forgery. You have the right to remain silent."

The clicking of the cuffs around Adrian’s wrists sounded through the ballroom like the final strike of a clock. Lila was weeping openly, smearing her expensive mascara down her cheeks, trying to hide her face from the battery of press cameras flashing incessantly near the door.
