Chapter 2 - The Gilded Fortress

Highland Crest was not a house; it was a fortress carved from limestone and granite, perched high above the metropolitan basin. Wrought-iron gates flanked by stone lions swung inward as the Phantom approached, closing behind us with the definitive thud of a prison door locking from the outside.

Inside the grand foyer, chandeliers of Waterford crystal cast diamond-shaped patterns across marble floors. A fire roared within an arched hearth tall enough for a man to stand in. Dr. Mercer, a quiet man with silver hair and wire-rimmed spectacles, cleaned the split skin of my upper lip and bandaged the bruises on my wrists where Adrian had wrenched my bag away.

"No fractures," Mercer murmured, packing his leather case. "Superficial lacerations, minor hematoma. The trauma is primarily emotional."

"Claire does not have time for emotional trauma," Eleanor replied from a wingback chair by the fire. She had removed her dark glasses. Her eyes were milky and unseeing, yet when she faced me, her gaze felt heavier than a loaded pistol. "Bring the tea, Mrs. Gable. And Claire—empty your mind of fear. Speak only in balance sheets."

I sat across from her, my bruised hands resting on the armrests of deep emerald velvet. "My father was Julian Vance. Before he died three years ago, he established the Vance Heritage Trust. Adrian married me six months after the funeral. Within eight months, he transferred the trusteeship to a shell corporation registered in Delaware called 'V-Holdings.' Two weeks ago, I accessed his personal safe while he was dining with his mistress, Lila. I found the original title deeds to the Harbor District waterfront properties. Adrian forged my father's signature six weeks before his passing."

Eleanor tilted her head. "Do you have the digital duplicates?"

"A micro-SD card sewn into the lining of my right lapel," I said quietly.

A thin, razor-sharp smile touched Eleanor’s lips. "Good girl. You did not cry in the rain because you were already holding the match."

"Adrian thinks I'm a hostage to his family's name," I said, cold fury sharpening my words. "Vivian constantly reminded me that the Vales had bloodlines dating back to the colonial governors, while my father was merely a 'builder.' They took my inheritance, humiliated me in front of their social circle, and now Adrian is attempting to secure the municipal port tender using my father’s original architectural master plans."

Eleanor set her porcelain cup onto the saucer with a soft clink. "Tomorrow evening is the Mayor’s Winter Gala at the St. Regis. Adrian has taken a front-row table to announce his harbor expansion and secure the final syndication loan from the city council. He intends to present his mistress as his chief financial officer while claiming you are resting at a private sanitarium due to grief-induced psychosis."

"How do you know that?" I asked.

"My dear," Eleanor whispered, leaning forward, "I may have lost my sight thirty years ago, but I have never failed to see a vulture circling my city. Thomas!"

The driver stepped out from the shadows of the arched doorway.
