Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

Adrian stood frozen, his mouth half-open, as if all oxygen had been vacuumed from the room. Lila’s hand dropped from his arm, her eyes wild with disbelief.
"Claire?" Adrian choked out, loud enough to carry across the nearest tables. "What... how are you—"
Eleanor’s cane stopped. She turned slightly toward Adrian’s voice, her expression serene, regal, and terrible.
"Mr. Vale," Eleanor’s voice carried through the silent ballroom without the aid of a microphone. "You seem surprised to see my granddaughter."
"Granddaughter?" Councilman Miller blurted out, looking between Eleanor and me. "Madame Whitmore... surely you mean Mrs. Vale? Claire Vance?"
"I mean Claire Vance-Whitmore," Eleanor declared. "The sole surviving heir to the Vance heritage, and the newly appointed Managing Director of Whitmore Capital. But it seems, Adrian, that you believed she was resting in an institution. Or perhaps... you believed she was still waiting for the six o’clock bus in the freezing mud of Route 9?"
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Murmurs erupted like fire in dry brush.
Adrian took a frantic step forward, his mask of composure shattering into jagged pieces. "Claire! What ridiculous game are you playing? You're having an episode. Ladies and gentlemen, my wife is unwell—she ran away from home last night during a manic state—"
"Be silent," I said.
The command was not loud, but it possessed the cold weight of an iron vault closing. Adrian stopped in his tracks, blinking as if he had been slapped.
I reached into the small, silk-lined folio Thomas handed me and stepped toward the center of the floor, right beneath the central chandelier.
"You told the municipal planning board that you hold the clear title to the Harbor District parcels," I said, my voice ringing out with terrifying clarity. "You told them the Vance Trust willingly transferred all rights to your shell company, V-Holdings. But forty minutes ago, the Federal District Court unsealed an indictment for grand larceny, wire fraud, and the criminal forgery of my late father’s signature."
I turned to Councilman Miller and the Mayor, who was staring with wide eyes.
"Here are the forensic handwriting analyses completed by three independent federal experts," I said, laying the bound folios directly onto the podium. "Here are the bank statements showing sixty-four illegal wire transfers moving eight million dollars from my father’s medical trust directly into the personal accounts of Adrian Vale and his mistress, Miss Lila Cruz."
Lila gasped, backing away into the crowd, but two plainclothes detectives were already standing near the service doors, blocking every exit.
"Adrian," Vivian hissed, grabbing his arm with trembling, claw-like hands. "Adrian, do something! Call our lawyers!"

"Your lawyers are currently at the Federal Reserve building, Mrs. Vale," Arthur Sterling’s dry voice announced from the perimeter. "And as of six-fifteen this evening, all Vale Enterprise assets, bank accounts, and corporate credit lines have been frozen under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act."
