Chapter 8 - The Desperate Strike

The foundation of Evelyn’s entire reality had just crumbled beneath her feet. For thirty years, she had manipulated, guilt-tripped, and emotionally extorted every person in her orbit. She had treated me as an inferior, a plain, bookish daughter whose sole purpose was to serve as a safety net for her favored golden child, Krista.

Now, the safety net had turned into an iron cage.

"You... you wouldn't," Evelyn gasped, clutching her lavender wrap around her throat as if she were suffocating. "You're bluffing. You wouldn't throw your own mother onto the street. You wouldn't leave your sister and her babies homeless!"

"Look at me, Evelyn," I said. It was the first time in my life I didn't call her Mom.

She looked. And what she saw in my eyes was not the trembling little girl who apologized for existing, but an apex predator who had built her empire with her own bare hands.

"I gave you eight days of peace after I gave birth," I told her, my voice cutting through the humid morning air. "I gave you a chance to be a grandmother. Instead, you called me at night, told me you didn't do my rules, and ordered me to leave my own house. You sent Krista to break in while my newborn was sleeping."

"I was desperate!" Krista wailed, dropping to her knees on the grass, sobbing into her hands. "Jocelyn, please! Pete has nothing! We have no savings! Where are we supposed to go?"

"You can go to the Department of Social Services," I said coldly. "Or you can tell Pete to get a job instead of playing parlay cards with money he stole from your grocery budget. But you will not cross this threshold. Not today. Not ever."

Evelyn’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred. The mask of maternal authority was entirely stripped away, exposing the hideous, rotting entitlement beneath.

"You ungrateful little bitch!" she shrieked, lunging toward the steps, her claw-like nails aiming straight for my face. "I gave you life! I gave you everything! You owe me this house! You owe me everything you have!"

She never made it to the top step.

Arthur Vance moved with an efficiency that belied his age. In a single, fluid motion, he caught Evelyn by the forearm, twisted her momentum, and guided her face-first against the hood of Wayne’s Ford F-350.

"Evelyn Cross," Arthur said, clicking a pair of stainless steel handcuffs around her wrists with a sharp, sickening double-click. "You are under arrest for attempted assault, criminal trespass, and violation of an emergency protective order."
