Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Scheme

Sarah Chen, the process server, moved with effortless precision. With a flick of her wrist, she slapped the first packet against Evelyn’s chest, followed by packets for Wayne, Krista, and Pete.
"You have been served," Sarah stated dispassionately. "Emergency civil protective orders prohibiting any contact with Jocelyn Vance or Clara Vance, as well as an immediate trespass exclusion order encompassing this entire parcel of land."
Evelyn looked down at the documents as if they were venomous snakes. "This is garbage! This doesn't mean anything! A daughter cannot issue a restraining order against her mother! We share blood!"
"You share blood, Evelyn, but you do not share this mortgage," Marcus replied, pulling a second document from his folder. "And while we are discussing legal documents, perhaps you'd like to look at this."
He held up a certified copy of a land registry title.
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed, then dilated with pure terror.
"The Brookside property," Marcus announced, projecting his voice so every neighbor peeking through their blinds could hear. "The home you and Wayne currently occupy. The home you claimed was held in an irrevocable family trust."
"Don't you dare," Evelyn whispered, her voice suddenly losing all its booming bravado, reduced to a hollow croak.
"Jocelyn bought that promissory note from the primary lender six months ago, Evelyn," Marcus continued relentlessly. "When you defaulted on the equity line of credit you illegally took out against our client's childhood inheritance fund, she stepped in to prevent a public sheriff's auction. But she didn't forgive the debt. She bought the note."
Wayne spun toward Evelyn, his mouth hanging open. "What? What equity line? You told me that loan was from your sister!"
"Shut up, Wayne!" Evelyn hissed, her composure completely disintegrating.
"She didn't tell you, Wayne?" I said, stepping onto the threshold, looking down at my stepfather. "My mother forged my signature on a fifty-thousand-dollar home equity loan three years ago to pay off your failed auto-repair venture. I discovered the fraud during my forensic audit for this home purchase. I chose not to send her to federal prison on the condition that she never contact me again."
Wayne grabbed Evelyn’s arm, his face turning an apoplectic purple. "You told me that money was a gift from your family! You committed bank fraud in her name?"
"I did it for us!" Evelyn screamed, thrashing against his grip. "I did it for this family! She was rolling in corporate money! She didn't need it!"
"And now," Marcus interjected, "due to your willful harassment, breach of the peace, and attempted unlawful entry last night, Jocelyn has instructed me to file for an immediate judicial foreclosure on the Brookside property. The notice of default was filed with the county clerk at 8:01 this morning. You have fourteen days to vacate that residence as well."

The driveway fell into an absolute, deafening silence. Even Krista’s children stopped crying, sensing the seismic shift in the air.
