Chapter 9 - The Final Collapse of Sophia Reynolds

With Adrian stripped of his executive power and his personal accounts tied up in asset division, Sophia Reynolds found herself facing the cold machinery of reality without a protector.
The illusion of her aristocratic lifestyle disintegrated within a month.
Her boutique apartment on the Gold Coast was repossessed after forensic accountants demonstrated that the security deposits and lease guarantees had been paid using forged corporate authorization from Moretti Holdings. When she attempted to liquidate the designer jewelry and vintage handbags Adrian had purchased for her over the years, she discovered that several luxury auction houses refused her consignments due to pending liens from our legal team.
Her final, desperate gamble occurred on a Thursday afternoon.
She intercepted Adrian outside his temporary residence—a modest high-rise apartment near the Loop, far from the grandeur of the Lake Shore penthouse he had once commanded.
She waited in the lobby, rushing toward him the moment he stepped through the glass doors with a paper bag of groceries in his arms.
"Adrian!" she cried, her voice ragged, her designer coat visibly soiled at the cuffs. "Adrian, please! They froze my accounts! My mother’s medical bills are due, and the bank is suing me for the lease! You have to help me. You owe me!"
Adrian stopped. He looked down at her.
For ten years, this woman had manipulated him with tears, playing on the guilt of a childhood tragedy where her family had fallen while his had risen. He had believed he was her knight, her protector, the grand benefactor who could heal the past with money and attention.
Now, stripped of his empire, his wife, and his self-respect, he saw her with terrifying clarity.
There was no grace in her. There was no affection. There was only the ravenous, panicked desperation of a leech realizing its host had no more blood to offer.
"I owe you nothing," Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.
"You promised!" she screamed, lunging to grab his lapel. "You promised you would never leave me behind!"
Adrian pulled away so sharply that she stumbled against a marble pillar. "I gave up the only woman who ever truly loved me for you. I destroyed my family’s name, my career, and my soul for you. And all you ever saw in me was an open wallet."
"Adrian—"

"If you ever speak to me again," he said, staring at her with cold, dead eyes, "I will hand the state prosecutor the personal diary you left in my safe—the one where you detailed every financial scheme you planned against my father’s company."
Sophia froze. The tears dried instantly on her face, replaced by a look of sheer venom. She knew the game was over. Without another word, she turned on her heel and hurried into the Chicago chill, vanishing into the crowd of anonymous commuters, never to step into high society again.
