Chapter 5 - Severing the Ties

Adrian stared at me, his chest heaving. "What are you talking about? I made a mistake, Claire! One stupid mistake because she was begging me and I didn't want a scene at Ethan's wedding! We are married. You took an oath."
"And you broke it," I said, gesturing toward Arthur Vance, who stepped out from the adjoining library holding a fountain pen and a leather-bound folder.
"Mr. Moretti," Arthur said smoothly. "These are the initial dissolution documents. Mrs. Moretti is requesting an amicable division: full restitution of the Sterling collateral held against Moretti Terminal Three, complete relinquishment of any claims to her inheritance, and the immediate return of all family heirlooms designated in Eleanor Moretti’s living trust."
"I am not signing this," Adrian snarled, glaring at Arthur with predatory hostility. "Get the hell out of my wife's house."
"This house was purchased under the Sterling Family Trust seven years before I met you," I said calmly. "You have no legal right to stand here, Adrian. And if you refuse to sign the amicable separation, Arthur will file the forensic audit of Reynolds Consulting LLC directly with the Securities and Exchange Commission by five this evening."
The color left Adrian's face instantly. His mouth opened, then closed.
"You audited Reynolds Consulting?" he whispered.
"I have monitored every wire transfer from Moretti Logistics since the month we married," I replied, standing up to meet his gaze. "I ignored your foolish sentimental gifts because I believed your loyalty to me would eventually outweigh your guilt toward her. But when you used company reserves to cover her debts, you compromised not only your father's business, but my family's name as your primary guarantor."
"Claire... I was trying to protect her father’s legacy. It was an investment—"
"It was embezzlement," I corrected him without anger. "And your board knows it. My father spoke with Vincenzo an hour ago. The Sterling bonds supporting your maritime operations have been recalled."
For the first time since I had met him, Adrian looked genuinely terrified. He was a predator who had suddenly realized he had walked into an iron cage of his own making. The walls of his empire, which he had believed were fortified by his own masculine strength, were collapsing because he had kicked away the very pillar supporting them.

"You're destroying me," he choked out, his voice cracking. "Over one evening?"
"No, Adrian," I whispered. "I am simply stepping out of the way so you can face the consequences of the life you chose."
