Chapter 2 - The Wrath of the Morettis

The private elevator doors chimed open, and the silence of the penthouse shattered.
Isabella Moretti swept into the marble foyer like a thunderstorm clad in charcoal cashmere. Behind her walked Vincenzo, his expression carved from granite, a walking stick with a silver wolf-head handle tapping rhythmically against the floor.
"Where is he?" Isabella’s voice wasn't loud, but it possessed the cutting authority that had silenced boardroom revolts for thirty years.
Adrian walked out of the corridor, smoothing down his rumpled tuxedo jacket. "Mother. Father. You didn't have to take the red-eye from New York. It’s a total misunderstanding—"
The slap echoed through the vaulted living room before he could finish the sentence.
Adrian’s head whipped to the side. He froze, stunned, a red mark blooming across his cheekbone.
"Do not insult my intelligence, Adrian," Isabella said, her voice shaking with contained fury. "Robert Walker called your father at two in the morning. Half of Chicago society watched you parade Sophia Reynolds around that ballroom like a concubine. And you gave her Eleanor’s bracelet?"
"It was a loan, Mother!" Adrian pleaded, his usual commanding composure crumbling into frantic defense. "Her necklace broke. She’s an old friend—"
"She is a parasite who has lived off your guilt since prep school!" Isabella hissed, stepping into his space. "And Eleanor’s bracelet is not a trinket to be loaned to your playmates. It is a consecrated symbol of this family’s name. You took it from your wife’s jewelry box and placed it on a woman whose family went bankrupt trying to defraud our logistics firm!"
Vincenzo did not shout. He stopped two paces from Adrian, leaning on his cane, his cold eyes sweeping over his disheveled son. "Where is Claire?"
I stepped out into the foyer, dressed now in a tailored ivory trousers and a simple silk blouse, my hair pulled into a neat chignon. I looked composed, collected, and entirely untouched by Adrian's chaos.
"Good morning, Vincenzo. Isabella," I said gently.
Isabella’s fierce gaze softened instantly. She crossed the room and took both of my hands in hers. Her eyes dropped to my bare fingers, and a sharp intake of breath hissed through her teeth. "Claire, child..."
"I have already contacted my attorney, Arthur Vance," I told them calmly, looking directly at Vincenzo. "The inventory of personal assets brought into the marriage has been compiled. I will not cause a public scene, but I will not remain in this house."
"Claire, no!" Adrian lunged forward, but Vincenzo raised his silver-tipped cane, blocking his son with a single, unyielding gesture.
"Silence," the patriarch commanded. He looked at Adrian with pure disgust. "You have forgotten who built you. You think your shipping lanes and luxury casinos run on your charm? Claire’s family guaranteed our maritime bonds when the European creditors tried to freeze our vessels three years ago."

Adrian blinked, turning toward me as if seeing me for the first time. He had been so blinded by his own vanity, so accustomed to my quiet support, that he had convinced himself my patience was a sign of helplessness.
"Get Eleanor's bracelet back," Vincenzo ordered Adrian, his tone flat and merciless. "By noon today. If that bracelet is not in Claire's hands before lunch, you will be stripped of your executive authority across every terminal on the Chicago river."
