Chapter 8 - The Serpent's Bite

The realization hit Bradley with the physical force of a sledgehammer.
He didn't cry like his father. He didn't drop to his knees like Vanessa.
Instead, the fear in his eyes curdled into a vicious, rancid venom. The polite, preppy facade dropped entirely, revealing the rabid cornered animal beneath.
"You think you’re a god, don't you?" Bradley hissed, his fists clenching at his sides. "You think because you’ve got billions of dollars and a few politicians in your pocket that you can just ruin my life and walk away clean?!"
Marcus took half a step forward, but I raised a single finger, signaling him to hold his ground.
"I have documentation, Margaret," Bradley spat, his voice dropping to a harsh, threatening whisper. "For the past six months, Vanessa couldn't keep her mouth shut. She bragged to me about everything. She told me about the off-the-books cash trusts you keep in the Cayman Islands. She sent me screenshots of your private offshore tax structures!"
Jonathan Vance let out a quiet, dismissive chuckle from behind his papers, but Bradley ignored him, locking his venomous glare entirely onto me.
"I backed up every single file she ever sent me to a secure private cloud," Bradley snarled, stepping closer, his chest heaving with desperate malice. "If I go down, if my father goes to federal prison, those drives go straight to the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the *New York Times*. You want to see how quickly your empire survives an international tax evasion scandal?! You want to see what happens to your stock price when the whole world finds out Margaret Bennett is laundering money through shell corporations?!"
He leaned across the corner of the table, his eyes wide and bloodshot.
"Five million dollars," Bradley demanded, his voice trembling with manic excitement. "Five million in liquid untraceable crypto to an offshore wallet, and a guaranteed first-class flight to Dubai for me and Elena. You give me that, and I give you the encryption keys. You refuse, and I burn Bennett Global to the absolute ground."
I stood there, perfectly still, looking at him with an expression of profound weariness.
"Is that all?" I asked.
Bradley’s triumphant sneer wavered. "What?"
"Are those the only threats you have prepared, Bradley?" I walked over to Vance's chair and picked up a slim tablet computer. I tapped the screen once and turned it toward him.
On the screen was a live video feed from a high-rise luxury apartment in Miami.
Elena Campbell was sitting on a white leather sofa, flanked by two plainclothes federal marshals who were methodically placing hard drives, USB sticks, and luxury watches into yellow evidence bags. Elena was handcuffed, weeping into her lap while an agent read her Miranda rights.
"Miss Campbell was detained thirty-five minutes ago at Miami International Airport," Vance announced smoothly. "She was carrying three laptops containing the exact encrypted backups you just referenced."
Bradley’s face turned from pale to an ash-like, hollow grey. "No... that's impossible. How did you—"
"Those 'off-the-books tax structures' Vanessa bragged about?" I said softly. "They were decoy dummy files planted in her personal cloud storage four months ago. I put them there specifically to see if she—or you—would attempt to weaponize them against me."
Bradley stepped back, his knees buckling until he bumped hard against the mahogany credenza.

"You never held leverage, Bradley," I said, setting the tablet down. "You held a loaded gun pointed directly at your own head, and you just pulled the trigger."
