Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Parasite

Jonathan Vance stood up from his chair, picked up a thick dossier, and tossed it onto the carpet right beside Vanessa's trembling knees. The folder fell open, spilling dozens of color photographs and printed text messages across the plush wool.

Vanessa looked down, and a gasp hitched in her throat.

The photographs showed Bradley Whitmore sitting in a dimly lit cocktail lounge in Midtown three months before the wedding. In every picture, he was accompanied not by Vanessa, but by a slick, sharp-featured woman in a designer business suit.

"Meet Elena Campbell," Vance said dispassionately. "Senior partner at Campbell Wealth Management, and Bradley Whitmore’s mistress of two years."

"No..." Vanessa whispered, shaking her head frantically. "No, that's a lie! Bradley loves me! He proposed to me at the summit of Mont Blanc! He bought me an eight-carat emerald-cut diamond!"

"Paid for with an advance from a predatory loan company," Higgins interjected smoothly. "A loan he intended to pay off using the Bennett Family Trust fund he assumed you would inherit the day you signed the marriage certificate."

Vance pointed to the text logs scattered on the floor. "Read them, Vanessa. Bradley’s phone was audited this evening under the emergency breach-of-contract clause in Whitmore Logistics' commercial terminal agreement. Read what your loving fiancé said about you."

With shaking hands, Vanessa picked up a sheet of paper. Her eyes darted across the printed words, her breath catching in ragged, agonized gasps.

*Bradley: 'The girl is an idiot, Elena. She believes every word out of my mouth. Her mother is some low-class peasant who lives like a dog in Queens, but Vanessa has access to a six-figure trust from her father's estate. Once the wedding is locked down, we squeeze her for the principal, pay off the marina debt, and dump her in an apartment in Jersey within two years.'*

*Elena: 'What about the mother? What if she objects?'*

*Bradley: 'That old hag? She doesn't have the brains or the money to hire a lawyer. Vanessa is embarrassed to death of her anyway. I told Vanessa that if her mother shows up looking like trailer trash, she needs to make a public scene and cut ties entirely. It'll isolate the girl completely. Once she has no family left, she’ll hand over every cent.'*

Vanessa dropped the paper as if it had caught fire. She looked up at me, her eyes wide with a horror so profound it seemed to strip the soul from her face.

"He... he planned it," she stammered, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "He told me... he told me you were trying to embarrass me on my biggest day. He whispered in my ear right before you came up to the altar... he said, 'Show everyone you belong to our world, Vanessa. Get rid of the baggage.'"

"And you obeyed him without hesitation," I said, pointing to the five butterfly stitches on my cheek. "You didn't just ask me to leave, Vanessa. You picked up a piece of heavy porcelain and you struck your own mother across the face. You laughed while your husband called me a parasite."

"I was stupid! I was terrified of being rejected by them!" she screamed, crawling toward the desk on her knees, her hands reaching out to grab the hem of my trousers. "Mom, please! I'm your only daughter! You can't let them destroy me! Bradley's lawyers are going to take everything! They're saying I committed marriage fraud!"

I pulled my chair back slightly, avoiding her outstretched hands.

"You don't have to worry about Bradley taking everything, Vanessa," I said softly. "Because as of midnight tonight, you don't have anything left to take."
