Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Caldwell

The uniformed officers stepped forward.

"Ethan Caldwell," the lead officer announced, unholstering a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for aggravated assault, felony extortion, and attempted manslaughter. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

"Mother!" Ethan shrieked, backing away toward the panoramic glass windows. "Do something! Call Uncle Robert!"

Margaret was clutching the edge of the conference table, hyperventilating. "Robert was arrested this morning, Ethan... they took him from his home at dawn..."

"No! No, this is a setup!" Ethan fought as the officers grabbed his wrists, twisting his arms behind his back. The cold steel ratcheted shut with a series of sharp clicks. "I am Ethan Caldwell! Grace is my wife! She belongs to me! Tell Marcus Bennett I’ll kill him! I’ll tear that old man to pieces!"

"Save it for the judge," the officer grunted, shoving Ethan forward.

Employees lined the corridors of the executive floor, their phones raised, recording every second of Ethan’s humiliating march toward the elevators. The golden boy of the regional elite, bloody-nosed, bruised, and cuffed like a common street criminal.

Downstairs, the lobby was swarming with television cameras, journalists, and photographers. Marcus Bennett’s PR firm had ensured that every major media outlet in the state was tipped off.

As Ethan was shoved through the revolving glass doors into the blinding flashes of the press corps, microphones were shoved into his face.

*"Mr. Caldwell, did you push your wife down the stairs for real estate collateral?"*

*"Is Caldwell Development declaring Chapter 7 bankruptcy today?"*

*"How do you respond to the leaked audio recording?"*

Ethan buried his face in his cuffed hands, cursing violently as he was shoved into the back of a police cruiser.

Behind him, Margaret stumbled out of the lobby, completely disoriented, with no driver, no limousine, and no private security to shield her. Her credit cards had been declined at the parking garage. Her home was already being seized under a temporary asset freeze.

She stood on the sidewalk in the pouring rain, watching the police cruiser pull away, realizing with absolute, horrifying clarity what her arrogance had cost her.

They had called Marcus Bennett a retired nobody.

And in less than twelve hours, that nobody had erased three generations of Caldwell pride without firing a single bullet.
