Chapter 7 - Margin Call

At 8:30 AM, the executive boardroom on the top floor of the Caldwell Tower was in absolute chaos.
Ethan sat at the head of the conference table, his broken nose covered with white surgical tape and two black eyes puffing purple against his pale skin. He was popping painkillers like candy, his hand shaking as he stared at the red numbers cascading across the projector screen.
Margaret sat beside him, nervously twisting her rings, her designer suit looking rumpled after a sleepless night.
"Where is our corporate lawyer?" Margaret demanded, slamming her hand on the mahogany table. "Why hasn't the injunction against the audio recording been filed yet?"
The head of legal, Arthur Vance, burst into the boardroom, completely out of breath, his tie askew. He didn't even sit down.
"It's over, Ethan," Vance gasped, throwing a thick stack of legal notices onto the table. "Cancel the board meeting. Call criminal defense counsel."
Ethan slammed his fist down. "What are you talking about? Did Bennett file a domestic complaint? We have friends in the district court! We can tie that up for years!"
"This isn't about domestic assault, Ethan!" Vance yelled, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "Apex Sovereign Capital just issued an immediate demand for full repayment of the thirty-five-million-dollar mezzanine facility!"
Margaret went white as chalk. "What? They gave us a thirty-day grace period on Friday!"
"The grace period had an integrity clause!" Vance explained hysterically. "Any felony indictment involving senior executive management triggers an automatic default acceleration! The State Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Ethan fifteen minutes ago for aggravated domestic battery, extortion, and attempted manslaughter!"
Ethan jumped up, his chair crashing to the floor. "Attempted manslaughter? She fell down the stairs!"
"They have the audio, Ethan!" Vance shouted. "The recording captured you saying, *‘You sign over the deed to Seacliff Point tonight, or when your old man gets here, I throw him down these stairs too.’* That is premeditated extortion and criminal threat! The state grand jury convened on emergency notice this morning!"
Before Ethan could process the words, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Three men in federal business suits walked in, flanked by two uniformed officers from the State Financial Crimes Unit. Walking between them was Marcus Bennett’s senior vice president, Katherine Cross.
Katherine walked straight to the head of the table, placing an embossed leather dossier directly in front of Ethan.
"Mr. Caldwell," Katherine said in a crisp, razor-sharp voice. "I represent Apex Sovereign Capital and Bennett Global Holdings."
Margaret gasped. "Bennett Global? Marcus Bennett?"
Katherine didn't even look at Margaret. "Effective 8:00 AM today, Apex has foreclosed on all pledged Caldwell Development collateral, including this building, your corporate accounts, and your personal guarantees. The board of directors has been dissolved. Your equity is zero."
"You can't do this!" Ethan screamed, spit flying from his lips. "This is my family's company! We built this city!"
May you like
Katherine offered a cold, pitying smile. "You didn't build anything, Mr. Caldwell. You borrowed on credit provided by Marcus Bennett. And now the creditor has called the debt."
