Chapter 8 - The Video Plays

Three state trooper cruisers, followed by two unmarked black SUVs bearing federal insignias, swept into the circular driveway with tires screeching against asphalt. Within seconds, the front lawn was bathed in flashing strobe lights.
Heavy boots pounded across the porch.
“State Police! Weapons down!” shouted an officer through the open entryway, his tactical carbine raised.
I immediately lowered my sidearm, cleared the chamber, locked the slide to the rear, and placed it on the side table with my hands raised high. “Captain Nolan Mercer, active duty Army. The situation is contained. Four hostiles in the living room; two are incapacitated.”
Six officers flooded through the door, followed by two agents from the Criminal Investigation Division in plainclothes.
Within two minutes, Marcus and his two surviving thugs were face down on the parquet floor, their wrists bound tightly in steel handcuffs. Paramedics entered with a trauma kit to stabilize the man whose knee I had broken, while the unconscious enforcer was rolled onto a backboard.
Brooke was curled in the corner behind the kitchen island, weeping so hard she was choking on her saliva.
A tall, grey-haired investigator from the Financial Crimes Unit, Agent Miller, walked into the room, holding a tablet displaying Evan Pierce’s transferred files.
“Captain Mercer?” Miller asked, shaking my hand firmly. “Your associate Evan Pierce gave us quite an earful in Newark. We have bank warrants, wiretaps, and three months of text records.”
“Did you see the assault footage?” I asked.
Miller nodded grimly. “We saw it. It’s premeditated aggravated assault, extortion, conspiracy, and identity fraud.”
Diane scrambled to her knees, reaching toward Agent Miller’s coat. “Officer! Officer, please! My son has PTSD! He assaulted these men! He’s having a breakdown! My daughter is the victim here—that woman upstairs, Eliza, she invited these criminals into our home!”
Agent Miller looked down at Diane with absolute contempt. He tapped his tablet and held it in front of her face.
On the screen was a text message sent from Diane’s personal phone to Marcus at 7:30 AM:
*Bring the clippers. I want her unrecognizable before Nolan’s transport reaches the terminal. We will handle the signature forms after she is broken.*
Diane’s jaw hung slack. Her voice died in her throat.
“Diane Mercer,” Agent Miller announced, unholstering a pair of cuffs. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit extortion, aggravated assault, and witness tampering. You have the right to remain silent.”
“No!” Brooke screamed as a female trooper pulled her hands behind her back. “Mom! Do something! Nolan, tell them! Nolan!”
I turned my back on them both.

I walked toward the staircase, leaving the noise, the sirens, and the ruins of the Mercer family behind me.
