Chapter 6 - Rendezvous with Evan

The strike was faster than any of them could track.
My left hand seized the tool-bag carrier by the throat, driving him backward into the solid oak doorframe with enough force to shatter the molding. My right elbow drove upward into his sternum, driving the breath from his lungs in a wet choke. Before the second enforcer could pull his hands from his pockets, my combat boot struck the side of his right knee, snapping the joint laterally. He collapsed to the floor with an agonizing shriek.
Marcus lunged backward, reaching into his charcoal coat, but before his fingers could clear his lapel, the cold steel barrel of my standard-issue service weapon was pressed hard against the bridge of his broken nose.
“Touch that holster,” I whispered, “and your syndicate will be collecting your pieces from the driveway.”
The third man froze, his hands instantly raising into the air, eyes wide with horror.
Brooke screamed from the kitchen. Diane collapsed onto the hallway bench, hyperventilating.
“Drop your weapons,” I commanded Marcus. “Both of you. Right now.”
Marcus swallowed hard, his bravado evaporating into thin air. With shaking fingers, he withdrew a snub-nosed .38 revolver by two fingers and dropped it onto the floor. The third enforcer unbuckled a utility belt carrying brass knuckles and a blade, kicking it away.
“Brooke,” I said, without taking my eyes off Marcus’s forehead. “Bring me their phones and their keys. Now.”
“Nolan, stop this!” Diane shrieked. “They’ll kill us! They know where we live!”
“Brooke. Do it, or I let them walk out of here with you in their trunk.”
Brooke scrambled forward on her hands and knees, sobbing hysterically as she stripped the phones and car keys from the men’s pockets, throwing them onto the entry table.
I grabbed Marcus by the collar, dragging him toward the living room sofa, shoving him down onto the cushions. The man with the broken knee lay groaning on the floor, clutching his leg, while the man who had shaved Eliza lay unconscious against the baseboard.
My satellite phone chimed in my pocket.
I backed up three paces, keeping the gun leveled at Marcus. I tapped the speaker button on the phone.
“Nolan,” Evan Pierce’s voice boomed through the room.
Marcus’s eyes widened at the sound of the contractor’s voice.
“Evan,” I said. “You’re on speaker with Marcus and my family.”
“Marcus, you piece of garbage!” Evan shouted over the phone line. “Listen to me! I just uploaded every single transaction log, your burner phone numbers, and the offshore account details you gave Brooke to the state police financial crimes unit! I sent a duplicate file to the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division!”
Marcus’s face lost all color. “Evan… you signed those corporate vouchers, you idiot! You go down with us!”
“No, I don't!” Evan barked. “I turned state’s evidence twenty minutes ago at the federal building in Newark! I’m under federal protection right now! They’re issuing warrants for Brooke Mercer, Diane Mercer, and your entire crew!”

Brooke let out a wail of absolute despair and dropped her head into her hands.
