Chapter 6 - The Unseen Listener

By midnight, the storm outside had reached its peak. Thunder shook the heavy glass panes of the mansion, and lightning illuminated the dark grounds in stark, terrifying flashes of purple and white.
I was sitting in Eleanor’s room, checking her IV line. Her pulse was stable at sixty-eight beats per minute, her breathing calm and deep. The atropine had cleared her system, and her body was finally resting after the trauma of the poisoning attempt.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
I turned around, expecting to see Marco or Vincent.
Instead, a young woman walked in. She was wearing a wet trench coat, her blonde hair damp from the rain outside. She was mid-twenties, beautiful, with sharp, delicate features and dark, nervous eyes.
It was Mia Vale—Julian’s younger sister and Vincent’s youngest cousin.
“Who are you?” Mia asked, her voice trembling slightly as she looked toward the bed. “Where is Dr. Hale? The guards downstairs said Eleanor was in critical condition.”
I stood up, placing myself between Mia and the bed. “Mrs. Vale is resting. I’m her private nurse, Clara.”
Mia took a step toward the bed, her hands clutched tightly around her designer handbag. “Is she going to survive? My brother told me... Julian said Eleanor had a massive stroke this afternoon.”
I observed Mia closely. She didn't look like a killer. She looked terrified, her eyes darting nervously toward the hallway door every few seconds.
“She didn't have a stroke, Miss Vale,” I said carefully. “She suffered an adverse reaction to a medication Dr. Hale administered.”
Mia’s face went pale. “An adverse reaction? What kind of reaction?”
“A toxic one,” I said flatly. “Someone has been poisoning your grandmother for two weeks.”
Mia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She backed away toward the door, her knees visibly trembling. “No... no, that’s impossible. Dr. Hale has been our family doctor since I was a little girl!”
“Dr. Hale was taking orders from someone inside this family,” I continued, watching her reaction like a hawk. “Someone who supplied him with illegal narcotics in exchange for making Eleanor sick.”
Mia collapsed onto the small velvet sofa near the door, bursting into silent, shuddering sobs. She buried her face in her hands.
“Oh God...” she wept. “I told him... I told Julian not to do it...”
My heart slammed against my ribs. I took two slow steps toward her.
“Mia,” I said softly, my nurse’s voice gentle, non-threatening. “What did Julian do?”
Mia looked up, her eyes wide with terror, mascara running down her cheeks in dark streaks.
“Julian lost three million dollars in a high-stakes illegal gambling den in Atlantic City last month,” Mia confessed, her voice a desperate whisper. “The people he owes money to... they aren't business executives, Clara. They are ruthless loan sharks from Montreal. They told Julian that if he didn't give them control of the Vale waterfront terminals by the end of the month, they would kill him and scatter his body in the Hudson.”
I swallowed hard. The puzzle was finally fully assembled.
“So Julian decided to kill Eleanor to get her voting shares,” I finished the sentence for her.
“He said she was already old!” Mia sobbed, clutching my hand tightly. “He said she had lived a long life, and that if she died naturally of heart failure, everyone would win! He said Dr. Hale promised it would be painless!”
Suddenly, the bedroom door swung open.
Vincent stood in the doorway. He had heard everything.
Behind him stood Marco and three armed security men. Vincent’s face was transformed into a mask of pure, absolute thunder.
Mia looked up, saw Vincent standing there, and let out a blood-curdling shriek of terror.
“Vincent! Please!” Mia fell to her knees on the floor, weeping hysterically. “I didn't help him! I swear I didn't know he was actually going to do it today! I tried to stop him!”
Vincent walked into the room slowly. He didn't look at Mia. He looked at me.
“Thank you, Clara,” Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. “You just gave me the final piece.”
Vincent looked down at his sobbing cousin. “Where is Julian right now, Mia?”
“He’s... he’s at the docks,” Mia gasped through her tears. “He’s meeting the representatives from Montreal at Terminal 4 tonight at one o'clock. He thinks Eleanor is already dead. He thinks you’re distracted here at the house!”
Vincent looked at his watch. It was 12:15 AM.
“Marco,” Vincent said.
May you like
“Yes, boss?”
“Bring the cars around,” Vincent commanded. “It’s time to go to the waterfront.”
