Chapter 6 - Shadows at the Perimeter

The compound shifted into combat posture within ninety seconds.

There were no screaming alarms. There were no flashing blue lights. The Moretti security protocol was silent, lethal, and rehearsed to perfection. Across the estate, external floodlights shifted angles, plunging the courtyard into calculated pockets of pitch-black shadow while blinding any approach from the tree line. Heavy steel hurricane shutters descended over the ground-floor windows with muffled hydraulic hisses.

Santiago stood by the gun cabinet in his study, sliding a customized Colt 1911 into his shoulder holster and racking the slide of an automatic shotgun.

"Tomas," Santiago barked into his earpiece. "Where is Sophia?"

"Locked in the safe room beneath the wine cellar," Tomas answered over the tactical frequency. "Two men are inside with her. Armored vault door is secured from within."

Santiago turned to Ruby.

She was standing in the center of the study, but she wasn't cowering under the desk. Her eyes were fixed on the security monitor displaying the south gate.

"They aren't coming through the gate," Ruby said suddenly, her voice razor-sharp and devoid of panic.

Santiago paused, one hand on his weapon. "What?"

Ruby stepped swiftly toward the monitors, pointing a slender finger at camera four, which monitored the old drainage culvert running beneath the service driveway.

"Matteo Cassano used this exact operational vector when he hit the Vance Institute," Ruby said, her words rapid and precise. "He leaves idling decoy vehicles on the main road to draw security personnel toward the front gates. Then he sends a four-man breach team through the drainage infrastructure or service conduits to bypass the perimeter sensors."

Santiago’s eyes narrowed as he stared at the culvert monitor.

For ten seconds, the screen showed only dark concrete and rushing rainwater. Then, a faint ripple disturbed the surface of the runoff pool. A silhouette clad in matte-black tactical gear emerged from the culvert pipe, carrying a suppressed submachine gun, followed immediately by a second, then a third.

They were already inside the outer wall.

"Tomas," Santiago whispered into his radio, his voice chillingly calm. "Decoys at the front gate. Real breach is coming through the south culvert behind the greenhouse. Intercept with extreme prejudice."

"On it," Tomas replied.

Gunfire erupted three seconds later—muffled, rhythmic *thwips* of suppressed weapons echoing from the gardens, followed by the deep, concussive roar of Moretti’s shotgun crews opening fire.

Santiago grabbed Ruby’s arm, his grip firm but careful. "You're going down to the safe room with Sophia."

"No," Ruby said, pulling against his grip. "If they breach the lower level, you need someone who knows how to open the secondary escape shaft. Sophia doesn't have her tablet, Santiago! If she panics in that vault, she could experience a full psychogenic seizure!"

"I am not leaving you in this corridor!" Santiago growled.

"I survived Cassano’s men once before," Ruby fired back, her eyes flashing with defiance. "I know their cadence. Let me get Sophia through the cellar tunnel while your men clear the perimeter!"

Before Santiago could argue, the sound of breaking glass echoed from the east conservatory—just fifty feet down the hall.

A breach team had bypassed the garden entirely.

Santiago shoved Ruby behind the heavy mahogany desk. "Stay down!"

He stepped out into the hallway, raising his weapon just as two men in tactical gear rounded the corner from the conservatory.

The hallway exploded into noise and muzzle flashes.

Santiago fired three rounds in rapid succession, the heavy slugs tearing through the lead intruder’s body armor and dropping him instantly onto the Persian runner. The second shooter dove behind a marble bust of Marcus Aurelius, returning fire with automatic bursts that shredded the plaster walls and sent shards of antique mirrors raining across the corridor.

Santiago pressed his back against the study doorframe, brass casings pinging against the hardwood floor.

From behind him, inside the study, came the sound of a shattering window.

Santiago’s blood ran cold.

He spun around. The study’s reinforced window had not shattered from an explosive—it had been breached with an industrial thermal-cutting charge. Through the smoking hole stepped a tall, gaunt man wearing an expensive charcoal suit over a Kevlar vest, his face half-shadowed by the dying storm outside.

Matteo Cassano.

In his right hand, Cassano held a nickel-plated revolver.

In his left, he held a pressurized aerosol canister.

"Dr. Brennan," Cassano rasped, his voice sounding like dry leaves scraped across asphalt. "Three years is a very long time to keep me waiting for my research data."

Ruby scrambled backward against the bookshelves, her back hitting the solid oak, her eyes wide with terror as the nightmare from three years ago manifested in the flesh before her.

"Cassano," she choked out.

May you like

"Drop the iron, Moretti," Cassano said casually, not even looking at Santiago as he stepped through the shattered frame, aiming the revolver directly between Ruby’s eyes. "Or the good doctor dies right where she’s sitting."
