Chapter 12 - Echoes in the Ward

The clinical wing of the Brennan-De Luca Institute was usually a sanctuary of measured progress. Children sat in quiet alcoves with occupational therapists; soft instrumental music drifted from hidden speakers; sunlight spilled across polished cork floors designed to soften the sound of footsteps for sensory-sensitive patients.

Sophia stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall of Observation Room 3, holding an electronic tablet. Her long dark hair was tied back in a neat braid, and her posture was remarkably composed for a nineteen-year-old. Yet her eyes were narrowed as she watched Ruby across the courtyard.

Ruby was sitting on a stone bench, staring blankly at a file, oblivious to the coffee growing cold at her side.

Sophia stepped into the corridor, her low-heeled shoes making no sound. She walked with the deliberate, graceful care of someone who had spent years trapped inside her own mind, hyper-aware of every vibration in the world around her. She approached Santiago, who was standing by the entrance pillar, ostensibly talking to Mateo on a secure line.

Santiago ended the call the instant his sister approached. "Sophia. Shouldn't you be reviewing the neuro-imaging slides for your afternoon seminar?"

"The slides are finished," Sophia said. Her voice was quiet, melodic, and possessed a pristine, crystalline clarity. "You are lying to your security team, Santiago. And Dr. Brennan has not checked a single patient chart in two hours."

Santiago felt a twist of pride mingled with sharp anxiety. "We have administrative matters to resolve."

Sophia tilted her head. She raised her hands, fingers moving in the swift, intricate dialect she and Ruby had shared in the dark green room when she could not speak:

*The fire is not out. It followed her here.*

Santiago caught her hands gently in his large, calloused palms, lowering them between them. "I will handle it, Sophia. No one touches this house. No one touches her."

"I am not afraid for the house," Sophia said softly, meeting her brother’s fierce gaze without flinching. "I am afraid because whoever sent that book knows that Ruby would burn the whole world down to find her brother. And you would burn whatever is left to keep her safe."

Before Santiago could answer, an alarm sounded from the main lobby—a sharp, double-tone chime that signaled an unscheduled emergency admission.
