Chapter 8 - The Secret Inside the Steel

Wesley walked slowly onto the dais, his boots ringing against the steel floor.

He didn't look at the exposed treasure. He didn't look at the priceless contents that held the fate of the Boston underworld. He looked only at Cora.

“How?” he asked, his voice barely louder than a breath.

“Julian was an eccentric,” Cora said, her voice cracking slightly with emotion. “He believed that human memory was the only cipher that could never be stolen by a computer. The experts tried to pick it using force and mathematics. But Julian built this lock based on the acoustic vibrations of our home. He told me once: *If anything ever happens to me, listen for my piano.*”

She turned her eyes to the velvet cradle.

Lying in the center was an encrypted black solid-state drive, alongside a stack of hand-transcribed documents sealed in archival mylar.

Wesley stepped up to the cradle. With gloved hands, he lifted the top mylar document.

It was a contract, stamped with the unmistakable wax crest of the Valenti crime syndicate. But as Wesley’s eyes traveled down to the countersignatures, his expression went from icy stillness to an inferno of cold rage.

“What is it?” Cora asked, noticing the terrifying change in his demeanor.

“The contract to murder your husband,” Wesley said, his voice dropping an octave into pure venom. “It wasn't ordered by the Valentis alone.”

He turned the document so Cora could see.

At the bottom of the page, below the signature of Don Marco Valenti, was a second name. A signature written in familiar, sprawling black ink.

*Dominic Cain.*

Cora gasped. “Cain? Your family?”

“My brother,” Wesley said, his fists clenching until the knuckles turned snow-white. “Dominic was the one who arranged Julian’s death. Dominic secretly allied with the Valentis two years ago to build this shadow network, intending to usurp my position while framing our rivals.”

Wesley looked down at the blueprints, then back at Cora.

“Your husband didn't just build a vault for them, Cora,” Wesley realized aloud. “Julian found out what they were planning. Julian realized Dominic was going to use this ledger to trigger a gang war that would have turned the entire city into a slaughterhouse. That’s why Julian hid it. That’s why he locked it with his life.”

A sharp chime echoed from the communication console near the bulkhead door. Rowan’s voice crackled through the speaker, urgent and tense.

“Boss, we have a problem.”

Wesley walked to the intercom, pressing the switch. “Speak, Rowan.”

“Dominic just arrived at the gates with three SUVs,” Rowan reported, the sound of cocking weapons audible in the background. “He claims he tracked a seismic frequency spike coming from the estate. He knows the *Aethelgard* is here. He’s demanding entry, and his men are armed for war.”
