Chapter 8 - The Shadow Hunters

Six months later.
Chicago was suffocating beneath a sweltering July heatwave, but inside the Romano tower, the air conditioning kept the temperature at a clinical, shivering sixty degrees.
Dante Romano had changed.
The handsome, charismatic don of two years ago was gone. In his place was a specter carved from granite and sleeplessness. He had lost weight, his cheekbones sharp, his jaw shadowed by dark stubble. He rarely went home to the estate; he lived in his high-rise office, surrounded by dossiers, shipping manifests, and surveillance logs.
His lieutenants feared him more now than ever. In six months, he had completely dismantled the Moretti family, absorbing their territories, eliminating their leadership with a calculated, surgical brutality that shocked even the older commission heads. He had wealth, unmatched power, and absolute dominance.
And yet, his life was completely empty.
The door to his office swung open without a knock. Marco Bellini walked in, holding a single sheet of paper. His face was unreadable.
"What is it?" Dante asked without looking up from his laptop. "If it's about the Detroit docks, handle it yourself."
"It's not about Detroit, Boss," Marco said.
Dante looked up slowly. Something in Marco’s posture made Dante’s heart hammer against his ribs.
"Speak," Dante ordered, his voice dropping.
"Twenty-four hours ago, a state medical database in Maine flagged a pediatric emergency visit," Marco explained, laying the paper on the glass desk. "A six-month-old infant was brought into a clinic in Brunswick with a high respiratory fever. Because the child required an immediate plasma transfusion, they ran a genetic blood panel."
Dante stood up, leaning over the desk, his eyes scanning the paper.
"The panel triggered a hit," Marco continued, his voice quiet. "A rare genetic blood anomaly—Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency carrier status. It’s an inherited trait found only in direct descendants of the Romano lineage from southern Calabria. Less than zero point one percent of the population."
Dante’s hands began to shake. "The mother’s name?"
"Emma Vance. She was using her mother's maiden name," Marco said. "The infant’s name is Clara Romano Vance."
*Clara.*
The name hit Dante like a physical blow. Clara. Light.
"Where are they?" Dante breathed, his voice cracking with emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel for half a year.
"A small coastal town called St. Jude’s Bay. She’s living above a vintage bookstore and bakery on the harbor," Marco said. "Dante... what are your orders? Do I assemble an extraction team?"
"No," Dante snapped immediately, rounding the desk. "No guns. No soldiers. Nobody goes near that town except you and me."
"Boss, she ran for a reason," Marco cautioned quietly. "If we go in like an invading force, she’ll run again. Or worse."
Dante grabbed his suit jacket from the back of the chair. He looked at his reflection in the dark glass of the window. He saw a man covered in sins, carrying the blood of an empire on his hands.

"I’m not going there as a Don, Marco," Dante whispered, his voice thick with unshed tears. "I’m going there as a beggar."
